On Tuesday’s broadcast of GMA, fill-in co-host Will Reeves led a segment about April Wise, a bus driver who saved a student’s life. He was almost hit by an oncoming car. Thanks to her quick thinking, the boy has a second chance at life. The bus driver from Dayton, Ohio screamed at the boy and pulled on his backpack.

At the end of the segment, Will mentioned Robin Roberts’ previous job as a bus driver. She confirmed that she used to work as one. Robin said she could relate to April. She also felt a sense of responsibility for the students she drove in her previous life.

“And you really feel the sense of responsibility,” Robin Roberts said. “And kudos to April. And you heard the gratitude of the mom.”

“It was instincts,” Will added.

“Yeah,” Robin agreed.

This isn’t the first time she’s mentioned it. During her interview on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Robin shared her experience as a bus driver. The former talk show host brought it up in 2022. Ellen was curious to learn more about Robin’s former job.

“I learned today for the first time, after all these years of knowing you, that you were a bus driver at some point in your life,” Ellen mentioned.

Robin Roberts corrected her and said she worked as a “school bus driver.” The comedian joked if she drove a “short bus or long bus.” The ABC News journalist confirmed that she drove the “big mama” bus. Robin was in high school when she worked as a bus driver.

Driving buses before co-hosting GMA

Ellen joked: “That seems safe.” Robin Roberts mentioned that she was 18 years old when she got her bus driver’s license. Around that time, she was also on the tennis team. They needed a bus driver, which is where she got the idea. They couldn’t travel to a tournament without one.

That was the inspiration that Robin Roberts needed to make their season happen. She underwent school, so she could pass. Robin worked as a substitute driver. She admitted that it was weird to drive her fellow classmates to school. Robin previously worked as a sports anchor and reporter. In 1995, she co-hosted GMA and ESPN as she worked her way up as a journalist.
