American Idol has already shown viewers a few potential winners for this season with more contestants to enter the competition in the coming weeks. One of them is Jon Wayne Hatfield, who was featured in episode two of Season 21. Many viewers were floored by his immense talent, but even more, people were touched by Hatfield’s story. Who Is Jon Wayne Hatfield?

If you didn’t catch episode two, don’t worry. Jon Hatfield is a 21-year-old singer and songwriter from Goshen, Ohio. Leading up to his emotional audition, he shared a bit of his personal story that led him there.

Hatfield was raised by his grandparents because his mom struggled with addiction while he was growing up. In fact, his grandfather is the one person that accompanied him on his audition. Viewers could tell how close the pair is, which made his audition even more touching.

Prior to trying out for American Idol, Hatfield has already seen some success in the music world. He has recently become a TikTok rising star, with 306,000 followers and counting at the time this is being written.

Additionally, Hatfield released his first single in November 2020. After getting good traction on the first song, he released another in May 2021. Both songs have been streamed more than one million times on Spotify.

As if that wasn’t enough, in August 2021, he hit the Music Row Country Breakout chart at number 58. He said he enjoys working in Nashville with other artists. “I like writing and telling stories that other people can connect with. My dream is to hear people singing my words back to me!” he said.

It looks like that dream isn’t far from coming true for him.

Jon Wayne Hatfield was one of the lucky few who received a Golden Ticket to go to Hollywood. During his audition, he gave a rather emotional performance.


According to Hatfield, he was dedicating the song he wrote to his grandpa, who was present for the audition. It was an original song, written by Jon Wayne Hatfield himself. Let’s just say there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

His performance and touching story were rewarded by a standing ovation from all three of the American Idol judges. Here’s a look at the tear-jerking audition.
