Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso is all set to premiere Season 3 and fans have been wondering if the popular sports comedy-drama series will inspire a potential spinoff. The series premiered on August 2020 and has received critical acclaim, particularly for performances by Brett Goldstein, Hannah Waddingham, and Sudeikis. With Season 3 to premiere on March 15, 2023, Warner Bros. Chairperson Channing Dungey has revealed if the series will have any spinoffs. Keep reading to find out the details!
Ted Lasso Star Brett Goldstein Confirms Final Season
At the Television Critics Association winter press tour, Apple TV+ revealed that Season 3 will premiere just in time to be considered for the Emmys in the fall. However, several reports suggested that Season 3 might be the final one for this award-winning series. Now, the series cast member Brett Goldstein has confirmed that the team is writing Season 3 as the final season.
Moreover, in a conversation with Deadline, Dungey addressed the possibility of a potential spinoff. Although the story and the characters have become so memorable among fans, Dungey maintained that he doesn’t want a spinoff just for the sake of it. She explained, “When you think of Ted Lasso, you obviously think of that unforgettable character. But I do think that when you’re doing a spinoff for a spinoff’s sake, that’s usually where you fall into some problems.”
Ted Lasso Season 3 Faced Multiple Delays Due To Rewrites
Dungey elaborated on her take and gave an example of The Big Bang Theory’s popular character, Sheldon. She mentioned how Young Sheldon was an apt spinoff given that it was a different way of looking at the character’s life. However, the same might not be applicable to Ted Lasso and a spinoff might not be a good idea in this case.
Although the Warner Bros. Television boss has shut down the possibility of a spinoff series, fans still have Season 3 to look forward to. Ted Lasso’s Season 2 arrived just a year after Season 1. However, fans have been waiting for Season 3 for a long time. This delay happened due to multiple production delays caused by several rewrites and other complications like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
What Is Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso About?
Ted Lasso tells the tale of the eponymous college football coach (Jason Sudeikis). Things take a wild turn for Ted after an unexpected call. He is shocked to get called to become the manager of a fictional English Premier League (EPL) despite having zero experience in coaching. However, the team owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) hired Ted only as a way to show up her ex-husband. Yet, Ted’s charming personality and ability to learn the game quickly helped him gain respect from Rebecca. Moreover, the team also made significant progress under his training.
As Season 2 ended Ted managed to guide his club to promotion. However, he did end up losing, Nate Shelley, his main assistant to West Ham.
