Former ‘DWTS’ Contestant Shangela Reports Death In Her Family
Drag performer superstar Shangela danced her way into America’s hearts during Dancing With The Stars Season 31. Online, she frequently credited her family with her success. Her mother and grandmother, nicknamed “Grangela,” were among her biggest supporters.
Shangela and her partner Gleb Savchenko finished in 4th place overall, which was quite an accomplishment. Afterward, the drag performer continued working on her other projects and keeping up with her online audience.
Sadly, Shangela had some heartwrenching news to share last night. She publically announced that a close loved one had passed away. Read on to find out more.
Shangela and her family members are in mourning
DWTS Season 31 viewers quickly fell in love with Shangela. She was always bright, bubbly, and ready to put her heart into every performance. And few fans could forget the chicken leg gag from this season.
But this week, fans are seeing Shangela’s serious side. The drag performer let her fans and followers know that she and her family members are in mourning. Grangela reportedly passed away sometime recently.
“My grandmother, our sweet #Grangela, has passed on. 🕊️ My family and I appreciate all the love you shared, and thank you for your thoughts, prayers and condolences at this time,” the 41-year-old performer announced on Instagram this week. She attached a photo of her hand holding her grandmother’s.
Grangela seemingly experienced poor health prior to her passing. Shangela often posted photos and videos of her beloved grandmother from a hospital bed. Although spending time together in a hospital is never ideal, it seems like the two made the best of things. Shangela clearly cared deeply for her grandmother.
Grangela definitely left her mark on this world and her family
Many people are close to their grandparents. But it appears that Grangela helped raise Shangela. Fans are really going to miss the fun photos and videos they made together.
“You were there for me from my first breath … I was there for you until your last,” Shangela shared today. “The grief comes in such unexpected waves, but I am walking through it, grateful for the time we had. And appreciative for the endless love. ❤️💔 #Grangela Thank you all for your condolences. Spending time with family now, and reflecting on the beautiful memories. I’ll communicate more soon xo Shangie”
Several of Shangela’s fans and followers left kind words on both posts. Gleb Savchenko simply left the emojis, “❤️💔” in the comments.
“I’m sorry for your loss @itsshangela it was [a] pleasure to watch your beautiful relationship over the years. Sending you all love x” fellow drag performer Davina Devine added.
