‘RHOSLC’: Heather Gay Unpacks Religious Trauma In New Book
The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Heather Gay has a new book out and wants the world to know. Bad Mormon explores Heather’s life as she grew up in the LDS church and how she eventually lost her faith.
The memoir is currently available for fans to purchase. But in the meantime, Heather is working on promoting her book and giving fans a glimpse inside painful moments of her youth. She recently appeared on John Dehlin’s Mormon Stories podcast to share her story.
Heather Gay’s memoir is a deep dive into her upbringing in the LDS church
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints goes by a few different names. In mainstream circles, it’s commonly abbreviated as “LDS” or “Mormonism.” LDS pioneers settled what is now the Salt Lake City area in the mid-1800s. As a result, that’s why so many active Mormons live there today.
In a nutshell, The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City wouldn’t make sense unless Mormonism played a role in some shape or form.
RHOSLC star Lisa Barlow once told Us Weekly, “When you think about Mormonism, there’s like a laundry list of things you don’t ever do, which basically makes you perfect and I am far from that.”
Now, it seems like Heather Gay is following the same path.
Without giving too much of the story away, Heather Gay bravely sat down with the Mormon Stories crew to discuss her experience with the LDS church.
In the interview, the Bravo star reveals that her time in the church really stunted her growth as a person. She admits that she hid a lot of her personality and self to conform to the church’s expectations. And sadly, Heather also revealed that her time as a Mormon taught her to lie. In the episode, she admits that she often lied to herself to excuse behavior the church would frown upon and she also lied to others in the community to protect her image.
Now that Heather Gay has children of her own, she doesn’t want them to grow up the way she did. During the episode, she informs the Mormon Stories hosts that she sincerely hopes her daughter gets to make her own decisions and won’t go along with what others expect of her.
After listening to the interview in full, fans can really sympathize with Heather Gay and feel her pain.
