Survivor is returning with Season 44 this March. The show has an amazing ability to continue setting new records and achievements for itself even 23 years after its first season. It’s the excitement of watching players consistently push the boundaries of the game that keeps us watching. This season already has that potential, and we know this by looking at the cast lineup. Recently, we’ve been getting a lot of details about the 18 new castaways for Season 44. Right off the bat, there are some very notable new players. Ones that would set new records and accomplishments for the game if they were to take the title of Sole Survivor.

From Puerto Rico With Love

This new season will have two Puerto Rican castmates competing for the million-dollar prize. A Puerto Rican winner wouldn’t be a first for the show. Actually, the very first two-time winner of Survivor is the Puerto Rican queen of the show Sandra Diaz-Twine. However, Sandra is only Puerto Rican through her lineage, and she was born in Stamford, Connecticut. Season 44 has the very first active resident of Puerto Rico competing, Yamil “Yam Yam” Arocho.

If Yamil takes home the victory, he will be the very first resident of a U.S. territory to win Survivor. Never before have we seen a winner from Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, or the U.S. Virgin Islands (for that matter, we’ve never even had contestants from the latter three). The other Puerto Rican contestant this season, Heidi Lagares-Greenblatt, was born in Puerto Rico but came to the mainland U.S. at an early age.

Survivor 44 For The Canadians

Season 44 also marks the third season of Survivor with Canadian contestants. Canadians have been allowed on the show since Season 41, but there weren’t any present in the most recent season. Thus far, every season of Survivor with a Canadian contestant has produced a Canadian winner. Season 41 had Erika Casupanan and Season 42 had Maryanne Oketch (both were born outside Canada but grew up in Ontario).

Season 44 has one Canadian contestant, Kane Fritzler. Kane’s hometown is Moose Jaw, a painfully Canadian name for a town if there ever was one. If the pattern of having Canadian contestants resulting in a Canadian winner continues, then Kane should be your winner pick. Also if he wins, he’ll be both the first male Canadian to win Survivor and the first Canadian-born person to win.

These aren’t necessarily the only firsts that Survivor 44 could produce. Just the possible firsts that we can see from the details we have right now. The season could produce a number of other firsts or new records depending on the performance of the contestants. We won’t know until the episodes start arriving on our screens.

Survivor Season 44 premieres on March 1st.
