The 12th Victim Re-Imagines Fugate’s Guilty Verdict
The 12th Victim docuseries is a mashup of recreated and archival footage that dives deep into the legal system and media handling Fugate, who claims she is innocent of the crimes. Despite the fact that she was found guilty of the murders at age 14, she maintains her innocence in the case. Additionally, the true crime documentary sheds light on the teenage couple who was charged and convicted of brutally killing 11 victims at random. It also re-examines Fugate’s verdict through a modern lens.

The upcoming Showtime series has been produced by Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville. As per Meaww, the series will premiere on Showtime Friday, February 17 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The network will release one episode a week for four weeks. It will be available on demand on various streaming platforms after the final episode airs.
Charles Starkweather Received A Death Sentence
In 1958, Starkweather, who was 18 years old at the time, killed 11 people in Wyoming and Nebraska with his girlfriend Fugate by his side. The incident sent chills through the Midwest. At the age of 19, Fugate was the youngest woman in the history of America to be tried and convicted of first-degree murder. Unfortunately, she was sentenced to life in prison. On the other hand, Charles was sentenced to death.

It was also one of the first true-crime stories that made it to television and inspired several hit movies like Natural Born Killers and Badlands. Additionally, in these movies, the duo was portrayed in a Bonnie and Clyde narrative.

The docuseries explores whether Fugate really had a hand in the murders or if she was just Starkweather’s hostage. Moreover, it dives deep into the killings and Fugate’s actual role, viewing her as an unwilling participant in the crime, aka, The 12th Victim.

This true crime docuseries is inspired by John Stevens Berry and Linda M. Battisti’s 2014 book titled The Twelfth Victim: The Innocence Of Caril Fugate In The Starkweather Murder Rampage. In the show, Charles Starkweather is portrayed by Jason Marrs and Ivy Votolato as Young Caril Ann Fugate.
