Warning: there are spoilers for anyone who has not seen the first four episodes of 1923.
When Is 1923 Coming Back From Midseason Break?
The Yellowstone spinoff-prequel 1923 is already taking a midseason break. This is only after Paramount+ premiered the first four episodes. According to the recent trailer, the new Taylor Sheridan series is going to return on Sunday, February 5.
First Episodes Of 1923 A ‘Prologue’
According to The Hollywood Reporter interview with James Badge Dale, who portrays John Dutton Sr., who is killed by sheepherder Banner Creigton (Jerome Flynn), the early episodes are an important vehicle to the overall saga. “It’s a springboard for the story [to] get Spencer home,”
The way I look at it is that the first three episodes are kind of a prologue. This is where the story starts. With the first scene you see in episode one, that’s the beginning of the story.
Taylor Sheridan shares the dire situation that the Duttons are now in. “I chose that moment in time [year 1923] to peek back in because you’re seeing the children that we’ve met in 1883 attempting to raise another generation of Dutton.”
This story now desperately needs a hero. That hero is going to be Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), John Sr.’s baby brother, and the only living child of James and Margaret Dutton. Spencer is going to be the one who helps the family survive and become the Duttons we know in Yellowstone.
Yellowstone Prequel Spinoff Getting Bonus Season
Although 1923 fans may be disappointed that the Yellowstone prequel spinoff is taking a month-long break, they need to be grateful for something else. Originally, this Taylor Sheridan-created spinoff was going to be one-season long. However, the Yellowstone creator decided that they needed a second season.
Could this extra season be a time jump to the year 1932? The logic is that originally 1923 was going to be called 1932. The story was going to start amid the Great Depression, and the era of struggles that the United States and the Duttons had to overcome to survive.

However, as Dale suggests, Sheridan decided to move up the time by nine years. This meant he could include Spencer Dutton’s trauma from WWI, his time in Africa, and his call to save the ranch. This change also allows for the inclusion of Jacob and Cara Dutton, who took over after the deaths of James and Margaret Dutton, where this saga begins.
Therefore, Sheridan chose to turn this mini-series into two seasons to give viewers the full Dutton family story. That means double the Duttons!
