Erin Paine hits a nerve with a touchy comment.

In a new post on the Duggar Bates Confessions Instagram page, a fan shared a video of Erin Paine making a comment that struck a nerve. In the video, which was originally posted on her Instagram Stories, she is working on packing and fixing up her old home in Tennessee. She and her husband Chad Paine recently moved their five kids to Florida. To help her accomplish everything on her to-do list, Trace Bates and his wife Lydia Romeike came over to paint. Warden Bates also pitched in.

As Lydia painted one of the walls, Erin filmed a short video, expressing her gratitude for all of the help. Erin said, “She’s an amazing painter. Trace trained her well, I guess.”

Below, you can watch the video in question.

Bringing Up Bates fans are in an uproar.

Fans are upset over this video because Erin said that Trace “trained” Lydia. Many feel that this was the incorrect term to use. One fan found this touchy comment from Erin “absolutely appalling.” Someone said they would be “absolutely upset” if a relative had said such a thing about them.

The Bates family’s religious beliefs are often under scrutiny by fans. There’s a lot of talk about how wives must submit to their husbands, which fans dislike. But some of Erin’s social media followers think her comment about Lydia being “trained” was a clear example of their sometimes controversial religious beliefs.

Bringing Up Bates fans point out a potential misunderstanding.

While some fans are upset over Erin Paine’s comment, others think this was all a big misunderstanding. It’s possible that Erin said that Trace trained his wife because he runs a construction business. One fan said, “I’m pretty sure she meant literally trained her on painting techniques, not beat her into submission lol.”

Another Bringing Up Bates viewer added, “Considering he owns a construction/contractor/home improvement company, it’s not insulting to assume he taught her painting techniques because he’s well-skilled in that?”

Erin hasn’t offered further clarification on what she actually meant. But fans are hopeful this was simply just a misunderstanding.
