Before Michael was born, Gil and Kelly Jo chose the name “Michal,” which is a biblical name. They went ahead and used the name “Michael Christan“ once she was born. However, they later learned who Michal was and decided they didn’t love the meaning. Got Questions, a website that provides biblical answers, noted that Michal in the bible had a “sarcastic and dishonoring attitude” and as a result, she never bore any children.
Because of the negative details about Michal in the bible, Gil and Kelly Jo wanted to change their daughter’s name. They were able to legally change one letter for free. So, they added an “E” and named her Michael, which is pronounced my-kul.
The Bringing Up Bates star has gone by Michael and Michaela (pronounced my-kul-uh). Some fans recall hearing that Michael didn’t like having a male name, which is why she wanted to be called Michaela when she got older.
To this day, it seems like she primarily goes by Michael. She hasn’t made any changes to her first name legally now that she is an adult.
