Rumors of a Back To The Future animated reboot on Netflix have been doing the rounds for several years now. Given how the movie franchise has a cult fan following, fans expected it to be picked by some network or another. This year, several classic movies and hit TV shows received a reboot like the latest in the list, That ’90s Show which is slated to premiere on January 19, 2023. So, is the popular sci-fi franchise really getting an animated reboot? Keep reading to find out the details!
Back To The Future Inspired An Animated Series On CBS
Back To The Future is one of the greatest sci-fi movies lauded by both critics and audiences. Its popularity grew so much that it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. The movie released in 1985 received two more sequels that were released in 1989 and 1990. Back To The Future also inspired an animated series that aired on CBS from September 1991 to December 1992 and had a total of two seasons. Later, citing low ratings, the series was canceled by the network.
Ever since then, fans awaited a new animated reboot. However, the official Twitter account for the franchise recently refuted the claims stating the series isn’t happening.

The tweet had a gif of actor Christopher Lloyd saying, “It ain’t happening,” in a response to Giant Freakin Robot’s claims of a Netflix animated series happening soon.
Fans Can Watch Back To The Future Broadway Musical In 2023
While an animated reboot isn’t happening anytime soon, fans can still watch the time-traveling adventures of Doc Brown and Marty on the Broadway stage. Back To The Future: The Musical is confirmed to debut on Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre in the summer of 2023. The Broadway musical adaptation had a world premiere in February 2020 at the Manchester Opera House.
Later in 2021, the show transferred to the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. Roger Bart, who was cast as Doc Brown, will also reprise his role for the initial Broadway run. As per CBR.com, previews for the musical will start on June 30, 2023, with the official opening night set for August 3, 2023.
Back To The Future Co-Creators Deny A Remake Possibility
Although fans would love to see the movies return in any form like a live-action adaptation for TV or an animated series, the franchise’s co-creators have denied any possibilities. They stated that no new movies will be developed while they are alive. However, if ever Universal plans a remake, Michael J. Fox, who was cast as Marty McFly, already has ideas of what he wants the remake to be like.
Back in October 2022, the actor said, “I actually had this thought that if they did the movie again, they should do it with a girl as Marty. There’s something about it that connects with people on every level. I just feel like it will come around again.” Fans who wish to binge on sci-fi nostalgia can stream the movies on Peacock.
