DreamWorks & Illumination Movies Headed For Netflix In 2023
DreamWorks & Illumination have deals with Netflix to bring their animated movies to the streaming service. The deal happens after the theatrical release of the movies and a short time for them to appear first on Peacock.
The deals allow the movies to remain in theaters for between 45 and 70 days, depending on box office success. After they leave theaters, they spend four months on Peacock. Then, they hit Netflix for 10 months. After this, they go back to Peacock for four months, and then new deals are worked out for the streamers. Netflix gets them again four years after their theatrical releases. Here is a look at what is coming to Netflix and when.
Minions: The Rise of Gru hits Netflix in January 2022
Minions: The Rise of Gru hit theaters in July 2022. The movie is already on Peacock and has been for a few months now. This is the first movie that Netflix has actually already announced the release date for. The movie arrives on Netflix on January 23, 2023.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish hits Netflix later in 2023
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish just hit theaters this month, a holiday animated movie event for families from DreamWorks. Since the movie just hit theaters, it should arrive on Peacock likely in February or March. This means the new Puss in Boots movie will hit Netflix four months after that, making this an arrival around June 2023.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
The Super Mario Bros. Movie hasn’t even hit theaters yet. The trailers have arrived and it looks like a fun time with Chris Pratt voicing Mario and the evil Bowser as the main villain. This movie, by Illumination Studios, will have its theater run starting on April 7, 2023, before hitting Peacock after that. It will then arrive on Netflix around October based on the timing.
The Bad Guys: Holiday Heist is a Netflix exclusive
The Bad Guys: Holiday Heist is a DreamWorks movie. It is the sequel to The Bad Guys, which hit earlier in 2022. The movie is currently in production and is set for a release on Netflix in late 2023. There is no announced date, and this movie won’t get a theatrical release. The Bad Guys is already streaming on Netflix as part of this deal.
Trolls 3 arrives in theaters in November 2023
The third movie in the Trolls series hits theaters on November 17, 2023. This makes it DreamWorks Thanksgiving release next year. It should hit Peacock in late January. It will then arrive on Netflix four months later, which means it should arrive in May 2024.
Other movies coming to Netflix in the future
Illumination has a Christmas movie coming out in 2023 called Migration. Not much is known about the movie outside of the small synopsis. “A modern-day comedy following a family of ducks who convince their over-protective father to go on the vacation of a lifetime as they attempt to migrate from New England, through New York City, and ultimately down to the Bahamas.” It is a December 22, 2023 release so it should hit Netflix in June 2024.
Despicable Me 4 is also in development and is expected to hit theaters in July 2024. This will put it on Netflix around December 2024.
