Veteran Saturday Night Live star Cecily Strong is parting ways with the NBC program after a final episode that aired on December 17, 2022. Ahead of the Christmas episode that aired on Saturday, the comedy sketch show’s official Instagram account confirmed that this is Strong’s last appearance as a cast member. After working with SNL for 11 seasons, the actress is now no longer a part of the show. Keep reading to find out the details of Strong’s exit from the show.
Cecily Strong Gets An Emotional Sendoff From The SNL Team
Hours before the comedian was set to take the stage at Studio 8H for one last time, Saturday Night Live announced her exit on its social handle. The post included a picture of Cecily and a video clip of hers from the show with a cue card that read, “We’ll miss you, Cecily!”
The post was captioned, “Tonight we send off one of the best ever to do it. We’ll miss you, Cecily!”
During her time with the comedy sketch show, the 38-year-old has impersonated some amazing personalities like Melania Trump and members of the Kar-Jenner clan. As per ComicBook, she joined SNL in the fall of 2012 and quickly became a recognized face on the show.
Earlier this year, the show said goodbye to some high-profile cast members such as Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, and Pete Davidson.
Cecily Strong Is Leading Apple TV’s Musical Parody Schmigadoon
While her exit from SNL has been emotional for long-time fans, it was expected for quite some time. Strong already has new projects lined up for her time after the show. Currently, the Primetime Emmy award winner leads Apple TV’s Schmigadoon, which is a musical parody series. It is executive produced by Lorne Michaels who is also SNL’s creator. So, technically, Strong isn’t moving far from home base.
In her final sendoff episode, Strong recreated her fan-favorite character Cathy Anne on the show’s Weekend Update section. She said she was there to say goodbye before she heads to the prison. She said, “Everybody has to go to jail at some point, and it’s just my time now, but I feel really lucky that I got to spend so many of the best moments of my life with these people that I love so much.”
Fans Cry Over Cecily’s Emotional Weekend Update On SNL
Kenan Thompson also bid adieu to his colleague on her final day as a Radio Shack employee. The show’s host, Austin Butler also got emotional singing Elvis Presley’s Blue Christmas as Strong joined in for a duet.
On Twitter, fans got emotional as one wrote, “I am glad we got one final Cathy Anne impression to send Cecily off! #SNL”
I can't remember a time Weekend Update made me cry but here we are. I'm going to miss Cecily Strong so much. First the monologue and this. How many times am I going to cry tonight? Any bets? #SNL #snlchristmas #cathyanne
