Kaiju No. 8 is one of the hottest new manga in Japan. It was only a matter of time before we got an anime announcement. We got that announcement recently, and now we have both the first teaser trailer and an official poster for the upcoming series. What does this new viral success have going for it? Could Kaiju No. 8 be the next global hit anime? Let’s talk about the details of the manga and what information we can take from the very first trailer.

Kaiju No. 8, A New Hit

Kaiju No. 8 is the story of two friends who vow to protect Japan from giant monsters after one destroys their hometown. One of these friends winds up with the ability to turn into a giant monster (A “Kaiju”) himself. He joins a monster-killing task force while simultaneously trying to keep his own monstrous nature a secret.

The teaser trailer, which just came out yesterday, doesn’t showcase too much. We see debris fields and building wreckage along with Kaiju No. 8 himself. The show is very obviously still in the early stages of development. The official poster which came out at the same time gives us a much more visceral look at the giant kaiju. It’s terrifying, ferocious, and definitely seems like it could be a quality action/thriller anime.

The Kaiju No. 8 manga began publishing in 2020. In just 2 years and with only 8 volumes the story already has over 10 million copies in circulation. That’s extremely impressive for a new story from a writer who hasn’t had much big success in the past, Naoya Matsumoto. There is already a lot of hype behind this new anime, and the manga is still going strong with new chapters regularly. This is leading many to believe that Kaiju No. 8 could be the next big anime hit around the world. Only time will tell, but with just one teaser trailer, there’s already a lot of promise.

The Premiere

Sadly, the premiere of Kaiju No. 8 Season 1 is still a ways away. The trailer and poster both mention 2024, but they fail to mention anything more specific than that. Meaning we could be getting it pretty early on in the year, or we may have to wait until fall/winter. There’s no way of knowing at this time. Toho Animation is the company working on the show. They’re most notable for concurrently working on one of the biggest anime in the world right now My Hero Academia. MHA has a pretty vast turnover rate between seasons, meaning Toho works fast. Hopefully, that bodes well for a Kaiju No. 8 spring 2024 release.

The premiere of Kaiju No. 8 will be sometime in 2024. We should know more details sometime in mid-to-late 2023.
