NBC’s popular science fiction drama series Quantum Leap has finally been renewed for a second season. A reboot of the 1989 series of the same name, Season 1 premiered on September 19, 2022. It amassed positive ratings from viewers. With the intriguing concept of time travel, the series’ pilot episode has 10.8 Million viewers on digital, streaming, and linear, and platforms combined. What Is NBC’s Quantum Leap About?

The news of the show’s renewal comes midway through the ongoing first season which is among the top titles currently streaming on Peacock. Starring Raymond Lee as Dr. Ben Song, the series continues the original story following Dr. Sam Beckett’s disappearance. It has been thirty years since the doctor vanished into the accelerator and now the project has been restarted with a new team.

With Song as the project lead, the team tries to decode the mystery behind Beckett’s disappearance and its relation to the machine. However, the project lead uploads a new program to the system successfully upgrading it to leap back in time. Now, just like Beckett, he is lost in time. His only connection is his fiancée Addison Augustine, appearing to him as a hologram only he can see and hear.

Quantum Leap Season 1 Airtime On NBC

Apart from Raymond in the lead role, the series also stars Caitlin Bassett, Nanrisa Lee, Ernie Hudson, and Mason Alexander Park. A month after the series premiere, NBC ordered six more episodes for Season 1. This increased the episode count to a total of 18. As of now, there is no premiere date for Season 2 as reported by ComicBook.

Talking about Quantum Leap’s renewal, Lisa Katz, NBCUniversal’s president of scripted content said, “We’re leaping into a second season thanks to the incredible work by our cast, producers, writers, and everyone who has played a role in giving this iconic NBC series a new life. As we continue to bring audiences to our must-watch dramas, it’s gratifying to know ‘Quantum Leap’ will have a prominent place next season both on our NBC schedule and the next day on Peacock.”

Quantum Leap airs every Monday on NBC at 10 p.m. and is available to stream the following day on Peacock.

Original Quantum Leap Was A Cult Classic With 17 Awards

The original series’ main premise has inspired several movies and TV shows such as:

  • Heaven Can Wait (1978)
  • Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941)
  • The Time Tunnel (1966-1967)

Although the 1989 series had a slow start in terms of ratings, it soon became jumped high and even bagged 43 nominations and 17 awards. The show even ranked among TV Guide’s Top Cult Shows Ever in 2007.
