‘The Witcher’ Showrunner Addresses Henry Cavill Leaving Show

Henry Cavill in The Witcher

The showrunner for The Witcher has responded to the negative fan reaction to Henry Cavill leaving the show. This follows very vocal fans threatening to boycott the show if Cavill is not the lead character. All of this despite Cavill giving Liam Hemsworth his blessing to take over.

Here is what the showrunner had to say and what is next for both The Witcher and former star Henry Cavill.

The Witcher showrunner on Henry Cavill leaving

Henry Cavill announced to fans that he was leaving the show with a post on his Instagram account. He then said that Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth (who is also Thor actor Chris Hemsworth’s brother) would replace him in the role of Geralt of Rivia. He then wrote, “As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.”

Despite Cavill asking fans to give Hemsworth a chance, many refused to consider it. They responded on social media with comments like “RIP the show” and others who said Cavill left because he didn’t like the show’s current direction. That ended up bringing showrunner Lauren Hissrich into the conversation. She admitted that Cavill leaving was big news for them too, and a shock they had to overcome. However, she asked fans not to give up on the popular Netflix show.

“Obviously, that [Cavill’s departure] is huge news. But what I don’t want to do is – this has to stay about Blood Origin, Declan [de Barra, Blood Origin‘s showrunner], the cast, and the crew. This is their time in the spotlight.” Hissrich said. She also asked for fans to watch Season 3 (which includes Cavill) so they can make more seasons of the show.

What is next for The Witcher & Henry Cavill?

What fans don’t seem to understand is that Henry Cavill seemed ready to move on. Demanding he return isn’t likely to happen for several reasons. Cavill has rejoined the DC Extended Universe as Superman and it looks like he will be back in the plans for the new DCEU creative head James Gunn. This big announcement came after he said he was leaving The Witcher.

Also, Liam Hemsworth likely deserves a chance to show whether he can make it before throwing in the towel. He gained a lot of fans after his turn in The Hunger Games. Whether he can bring the same charm to Geralt as Cavill remains to be seen. Also, Michelle Yeoh will serve as the lead in Blood Origin, so there is still major talent in The Witcher franchise.

Will you watch The Witcher without Henry Cavill in the lead role? Plus, will you give the show a chance even with the actor leaving? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
