Will Hayley Atwell Return To MCU As Peggy Carter?
Could Hayley Atwell come back to the MCU as Peggy Carter? Since her character has already returned twice in 2021 and 2022, fans could see her back with a very different look. If she has her way, it will be a Marvel Disney+ series.
Here is a look at what the MCU might have planned for Peggy Carter and whether Hayley Atwell will be back for the role.
Is Peggy Carter coming back to the MCU?
MCU fans got to know Peggy Carter first when Hayley Atwell played the hero in Captain America: The First Avenger. That movie took place during World War II. Therefore, no one expected to see anyone again outside of flashbacks outside of Captain America himself. That turned out to be a mistaken assumption.
ABC created the series Marvel’s Agent Carter after Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was a success. This series followed Agent Peggy Carter after World War II when she slowly oversaw the formation of S.H.I.E.L.D. in its early days. Hayley Atwell returned for this role. The show lasted two seasons before ABC canceled it.
Peggy Carter was back as an elderly woman in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where she said her goodbyes to Steve Rogers. She also appeared in the flashback scenes in Ant-Man as the movie set up Hank Pym as a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent known as Ant-Man. However, fans were shocked when Peggy returned in 2021 with a very different look.
In 2021, What If…? saw Atwell return in a voice role for Peggy Carter. In this story, Marvel asked what would happen if Peggy was the super soldier rather than Steve Rogers. She became Captain Carter. Then, in 2022, Atwell was back in live action as Captain Carter in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, playing the character form What If…?, but on a different Earth.
What would Hayley Atwell return to the MCU as?
When asked about returning to the MCU, Hayley Atwell said she has already pitched an idea for a Disney+ series to Marvel. However, no matter how much fans want to see her as Captain Carter, she wants to come back as Agent Carter.
“The experience I’ve had in playing her has given me the most incredible opportunity to hone my particular craft in this franchise,” Atwell said in a recent interview. “And I want more to do because I feel that fans deserve that.” That could be for the role that she previously pitched about an Agent Carter series that follows Steve Rogers going back in time to grow old with her. However, it wouldn’t feature Captain America, who retired and would instead watch her have adventures.
“And the great thing is, Cap’s cool with that because he’s a feminist. He’s not insecure about that,” she said. “He lets her go off and live her best life and fulfill her truest potential because he knows the contribution that she’s got to make in the world, and that makes him even more attractive to her.”
For fans of the Captain Carter version, the good news is there will be another What If…? episode with the character in Season 2. Atwell will be back to voice the character again.
