Per Variety, Clarence Gilyard Jr.’s cause of death has yet to be released to the public. Likewise, there hasn’t been much information at all released regarding his death beyond a confirmation that he has passed away.
It was the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where the actor has been working as a film and theater professor, that first confirmed his death. See the official statement confirming his passing down below:

Whenever we asked him how he was, he would cheerfully declare that he was ‘Blessed!’ But we are truly the ones who were blessed to be his colleagues and students for so many years. Clarence Gilyard Jr. was an accomplished actor and most agree he really shined bright during the 1980s. During that time, he had a number of guest star roles. He made his debut as a movie star by stepping into the role of Sundown in Top Gun. He played a terrorist computer whiz named Theo in Die Hard. As the 1980s came to an end, he managed to recurring role in Matlock playing Conrad McMasters.
