Limitless

This brand-new series from National Geographic is about how far a person can go in extreme situations. In one episode, he walks across a crane a thousand feet in the air. In another, he goes swimming in the freezing waters of the Arctic Ocean. These thrill-seeking activities would be enough to terrify a person, but not Chris Hemsworth. His roles have included immortals and gods. He can beat any wild situation that is thrown at him. But, recently, he got some concerning news that has him reconsidering his role in life and Hollywood. During filming, Chris learns he carries two genes that cause the serious condition of Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia. It takes away the person’s ability to retain short-term memories. In some extreme cases, the patient can lose the ability to interact with the world around them. This condition affects more than 20 million people worldwide. There is no cure, and it worsens steadily as the disease progresses. While doctors can’t predict everyone who will get Alzheimer’s, genetics is a good indicator. The gene APOE4 is responsible for causing this disease, and it turns out Chris Hemsworth has two of these genes. While this doesn’t guarantee he will get Alzheimer’s, this particular collection of genes makes it eight times more likely that he will.

Is Retirement Looming?

After discovering his risk factor for Alzheimer’s Disease, Chris has decided to take a step back from filming. He will finish all his contractual obligations but wants to spend more time with his family. He shares three children with his wife, Elsa Pataky. So, it is only natural to take a break to absorb this information and understand how it could affect his future. Luckily, Chris Hemsworth is in peak physical and mental condition. We wish him luck and continued good health after learning he carries the genes for Alzheimer’s.
