Amid ongoing Marvel cutbacks, the future of its Animation studios is currently in jeopardy. With a few MCU animation projects coming to Disney+, the titles might be in line for being axed soon. What titles are these? How will they be affected? Keep reading to find out the details!
Insider KC Walsh Reveals Details Of Marvel Animation Layoffs
Back in 2021, Marvel released its very first completely animated series titled What If..?. The series delivered a thrilling round of stories from an alternate reality featuring the voices of almost all on-screen actors from MCU’s history. What If..? marked the first of several animation outings that are set to arrive at Disney+ over the next few years. However, a recent report suggests these upcoming releases might be in danger of being axed.
On Twitter, KC Walsh, an insider, and quasi-Marvel expert revealed that Marvel Studios Animation is currently undergoing several internal layoffs. The insider also revealed that Marvel won’t green-light new seasons of animated shows if it doesn’t see positive results from the ones that are already in the works. As per The Direct, this is mostly due to the fact that animated series take up a long duration to develop. So, this means that Marvel’s new venture into the animated storytelling universe could be over even before it gets off the ground.
Will Disney+ Animated Series What If..? Be Cancelled?
What If…? Season 2 is deep into developed and set to premiere sometime next year. The animated series will feature new stories with characters such as the Scarlet Witch, Melina Vostokoff, and Captain Carter.
At the San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel also announced that a third season is already underway. However, there are no signs confirming that the third season would debut unless Season 2 does well.
Marvel Zombies Season 1 Set To Premiere In 2024
Marvel Studios also confirmed that the fifth episode of What If…? Season 1 will have its very own spinoff series. Titled Marvel Zombies, the series was first teased for fans at the SDCC 2022.
In this alternative universe, fans will see several marvel characters reprise their roles as zombie hunters and zombies alike. Although the first season is deep into development, it won’t make it to the streaming platform for at least another year. So, its future is currently unknown.
Spider-Man: Sophomore Year was also announced at the Comic-Con with a fresh set of creative crew. However, putting together an entirely new crew amid cutbacks might not be something Marvel will try at this point in time. With Freshman Year at least a year away from its premiere, the second season is most likely to be on the chopping block.
Brian Kesinger’s Unnamed Disney+ Project Might Be Axed
Another unique entry that might not make it to the streaming platform is X-Men ’97. This is a direct continuation of the original X-Men: The Animated Series that aired in the 90s. If it does debut, it will be the first X-Men-centric project under the Marvel Studios umbrella. Although Season 1 is set to arrive in 2023, no news of a second season is out yet.
The last one on the list is an unnamed project by Brian Kesinger. No news of when this animated series will go into development has been specified yet. Best known for his work on Zootopia and Big Hero 6, this new project by Brian might be a part of the drastic cuts being made to the animation department.
