Lucasfilm and Studio Ghibli are two of the most successful fantasy-producing film studios. At least in the United States and Japan, respectively. A collaboration between the two on one of the biggest franchises of all time seems like a dream. Now that dream is a reality today on Disney+. Studio Ghibli has produced a Star Wars short for the streaming platform about one of the franchise’s most popular new characters.

Studio Ghibli & Star Wars

The short is just over four minutes long and is less of a story and more of a cute idea set to beautiful music and hand-drawn animation. It showcases Grogu, AKA “Baby Yoda”, one of the most popular new Star Wars characters from the hit show The Mandalorian. Alongside Grogu are the Dust Bunny creatures from the classic Studio Ghibli film My Neighbor Totoro.

Grogu and the Dust Bunnies are considered two of the most adorable pop culture characters. So it’s adorable to see them interacting with one another in this offshoot. This goes in the ever-expanding library of Disney+ Star Wars content. That library has exploded in the last couple of years with so many new projects. In 2022 alone we’ve gotten AndorKenobiTales Of The Jedi, and this new Studio Ghibli short.

It is a lot to take in for fans of the franchise which was just putting out a movie once a year not too long ago. The output isn’t slowing down anytime soon, either. In 2023 we’re set to receive new seasons of The MandalorianThe Bad Batch, and Visions. On top of that, we’ll be getting the first seasons of new shows like AhsokaThe Skeleton Crew, and The Acolyte. No, you’re not the only one having trouble keeping track of it all.

Japan’s Biggest Anime Studio

Does this brief collaboration between Disney and Studio Ghibli hint at something bigger coming in the future? Possibly, but it’s unlikely it will happen anytime soon. Right now, the majority of Studio Ghibli is focused on the upcoming film How Do You Live? It is said to be the final film led by Ghibli’s longtime face and one of its founders Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki is the director responsible for many of the studio’s classics from Spirited Away to Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle.

Studio Ghibli is one of the only popular animation studios left still doing hand-drawn animation, an intensely time-consuming process. This means even though the film has already been in production for 6 years, it takes longer to reach theaters. Any potentially longer-form Star Wars collaboration will have to go on the backburner until then.

Grogu and Dust Bunnies is out on Disney+ now and available for streaming worldwide.
