Is Kody Brown Only A Bad Guy When Cameras Are Rolling?
For several seasons now, Sister Wives viewers have watched Kody Brown exhibit a pattern of bad behavior onscreen. He treats most of his wives cruelly, demands they follow orders, and shows little to no interest in his adult children.
There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that onscreen, Kody is a nightmare to deal with. But is he just putting on a show for the cameras? Fans recently dissected this idea online. Keep reading to see what they had to say.
Does Kody Brown play it up for the cameras?
As Sister Wives Season 17 continues, fans online continue to offer interesting theories. For example, do any of Kody’s wives actually even like him? More recently, one online fan proposed that the family patriarch may only act like a jerk onscreen. But what would motivate him to act like that?
“Unlikely theory,” the original Redditor wrote online. “Kody has to be one of the most unlikeable characters on television. He is a one dimensional caricature of a villain Yet, many of his family members speak highly of him (even when they are not on television).”
The OP went on to say that somehow, the Brown family has kept the show going for 17 seasons, spanning the course of 12 years now. So why do his family members keep sticking around?
“It got me thinking: what if Kody realized that the only way to keep the show (and therefore the money his family needs) was for him to be villain and these past few years he has been pretending to be a jerk just to keep his family paychecks going? What if, when the cameras are off, he is a super involved parent who sacrificed his public image for his family? I’ll grant you, it is highly unlikely. It would explain a lot though!”

“…I think he is awful and the kids and wives have been trained for years to only say positive in public. I don’t think at all it is an act the way he is behaving. Even when they sort of say negative they do it very gently,” another user replied. “Of course his friends are going to say positive things. Look who his friends are. An abuser that beat his wife, other polygamists, & relatives.”
Another user brought up that Christine Brown definitely left Kody in real life — that wasn’t just for the show. In other words, his behavior would definitely have to be bad enough to drive her away.
