Hallmark actor Trevor Donovan has surprised many Dancing With The Stars viewers. The judges have called him a “dark horse” from time to time, but his scores were consistently near the bottom of the leaderboard. After landing in the bottom two and getting saved twice, many fans lost their faith in Trevor.

However, something must have happened in the rehearsal room before the Halloween Night episode. He and his pro partner Emma Slater managed to pull off a beautiful contemporary routine to “Ghost” by Justin Bieber. The judges gave them a 39/40, which is the same score they awarded frontrunner Charli D’Amelio.

When Trevor and Emma got to the skybox, the actor began to cry and said that it had been such an emotionally vulnerable week for him. What exactly happened?

Hallmark actor Trevor Donovan has a vulnerable moment onscreen

Over the past few weeks, many DWTS Season 31 viewers thought that Trevor Donovan and Emma Slater would be on the chopping block again. They seemed to flounder rather than thrive together in the ballroom and it showed in their scores. But that definitely all changed during Halloween Night.

During the episode, Trevor Donovan revealed he had recently lost some people that were very close to them. The routine and lyrics to “Ghost” made him emotional and it brought up difficult feelings to the surface.

The actor didn’t go into any greater detail, but fans believe that the performance helped him overcome some of those feelings.

Of course, a lot of the confidence may have something to do with Trevor’s partnership with Emma. It’s undeniable that they have chemistry. Several fans think they may actually be dating amid Emma’s divorce from Sasha Farber. She’s bringing a lot of light into Trevor’s light, even when things feel tough.

“I was thinking about this the other day. … We’ve really got to, like, a really comfortable [place],” the pro dancer told Us Weekly this week. “This week, we laughed a lot. I think I laughed a lot at [his], like, facial expressions.”

Emma Slater admits to booing Carrie Ann Inaba

British dancer Emma Slater may appear sweet, but she has a bit of a mischievous side as well. During the Halloween Night episode, she got caught booing judge Carrie Ann Inaba while the judge was critiquing Vinny Guadagnino and Koko Iwasaki’s routine.

“I hear a little boo. Is that Emma? Why do I feel like that’s Emma? Emma, I know it’s you! It’s OK, I love you,” Carrie Ann joked before threatening, “Have you danced yet? No, just kidding.”

The onscreen moment was funny, but Emma later admitted to the crime.

“I’m a massive cheerer, but I’m a massive boo-er as well because it’s TV and that’s the name of the game,” she told Parade. “I like to support my friends and my colleagues when they’re getting some remarks, so I very lightly booed, but she definitely called me out on it. I was like, ‘I’m so sorry.’ I was very sorry about that but it’s the protective side of me.”
