‘DWTS’: Shangela Comments On That ‘Crispy’ Surprise This Week
DWTS Season 31 contestant Shangela is definitely a force in the ballroom. Each week, the drag performer comes back and performs better than she did the week before. It’s absolutely clear that she wants to bring home the Mirrorball Trophy at the end of the season.
Last week, the judges told Shangela that she needed to work on having crisper legs in order to bring her score up. It seems she really took that advice to heart. At the end of her routine on Michael Buble Night, she had a special surprise for the judges.
Shangela served up a major surprise for the judges this week
Fans that caught the Michael Buble episode of DWTS definitely saw something they had never seen before. Contestant Shangela performed a stunning routine — and then proceeded to pull a few legs of fried chicken out of her cleavage.
It was a joke since the judges previously told her she needed to have crispy legs while performing. They noted Shangela’s technique was much better on the floor, but they weren’t expecting the extra chicken legs along with it.
“I had no idea [she was doing that] until the end,” her partner Gleb Savchenko told Page Six after the episode. “At the beginning of the number, Shangela had confetti. She came out of the red carpet and did the whole thing. So before the dance, I saw something tucked in [her dress] and I was like, ‘Oh, maybe it’s the glitter.’ And then, no, it was fried chicken.”
Although it definitely got a laugh from the judges and the audience, Shangela admitted that she hid the surprise from Gleb because she knew he probably wouldn’t let her do it.
“I didn’t tell him because, as a choreographer, I know he is laser-focused on me just focusing on the moves and the technique,” she revealed to Page Six. “And I wanted to definitely be laser-focused on that, but, you know, I’m Shangela. I like to bring a little fun, a little spontaneity, a little surprise, and it was one for him, too.”
But the biggest surprise of the night was probably that hostess Tyra Banks actually took a bite out of it. Social media lit up with reactions from fans.

Halloween Night will be the theme for Monday’s episode
Shangela and Gleb will be back next Monday night to compete on Halloween Night. It’s going to be a spectacular evening filled with spooky routines. What surprises will the pair have in store next week? Fans will just have to tune in and find out.
The pair will perform Jazz to “Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor Swift on Monday for their individual routine. As for the team routine, they will be part of “Team Wicked” and perform a routine to “The Witches Are Back” from Hocus Pocus 2. Their teammates include Vinny Guadagnino and Koko Iwasaki, Gabby Windey and Val Chmerkovskiy, Heidi D’Amelio and Artem Chigvintsev, and Jordin Sparks and Brandon Armstrong.
