Tim Burton Stunned ‘Wednesday’ Creators With His Decision
The Addams Family spinoff series, Wednesday, is all set to premiere on November 23, 2022. This comedy horror series centers on the character Wednesday Addams and is created by Alfred Gough, Miles Millar, and Tim Burton. Before the production started, Alfred and Miles never thought that Tim would ever say yes to the script. However, the decision that Tim ultimately took, surprised them both. What did he say? Netflix’s Wednesday Shares The Tim Burton Movie Tone
In an interview, the creative duo had the notion from the get-go that their script had the classic Tim Burton movie tone. It has a sense of being gothic and creepy while ensuring it has the element of humor. Although initially, the creators expected that the pitch would be rejected by Tim, they still thought it was worth a try.

About their conversation on the script with Tim Burton, Gough explained, “If you don’t ask, the answer’s no. We sent him the first script and three days later his agent called and said, Tim loves it.”
Tim Burton chimed in his interest in TV series after the COVID-19 pandemic halted movie productions. He said, “It was a weird period of time. I’d never really had a burning desire to do television. Then it came to me, and it was interesting.”
Wednesday Isn’t Tim Burton’s First Addams Project
As per CBR.com, this is Tim’s first Addams Family project. Back in 1991, he was considered to direct the feature film, but he chose to pass and worked on Batman Returns instead. The project was then taken up by Barry Sonnenfeld who ended up working on its 1993 sequel Addams Family Values as well.

In 2010, another project was announced in the stop-motion variant with Burton serving as the co-producer and co-writer. However, it was eventually canceled. Later on, a CGI animation directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon was released in 2019 followed by another sequel in 2021.
Burton’s Interest For The Addams Family Started With A Comic
Burton always had a soft spot for The Addams Family story. This dates as far back as the original one-panel comics. He stated, “I always had trouble with comic books because I never knew which box to read. I was frustrated by them. Charles Addams was very simple and direct and said it in one picture. I really liked his take on things.”

“Gough & Millar’s script for Wednesday just spoke to me about how I felt in school and how you feel about your parents, how you feel as a person. It gave the Addams Family a different kind of reality. It was an interesting combination,” he explained.
Once Tim was on board, the trio started working on Wednesday as a movie, only expanded into an eight-hour format.
