Fantasy Anime ‘Made In Abyss’ Renewed For Season 3?
A creative take on dark fantasy, Made In Abyss anime series’ first season premiered in 2017 with a total of 13 episodes. Produced by Kinema Citrus, the series aired on Adult Swim. This was followed by a second season that aired in July 2022 and concluded recently on September 28 with a total of 12 episodes. However, there is no news on whether the series is renewed for a third season. So, is the anime series being renewed? Or has it been canceled? Keep reading to find out!
Made In Abyss Entails Riko’s Adventure Into The Earth’s Depths
Based on the manga series of the same name, Made In Abyss was illustrated and written by Akihito Tsukushi. This fantasy anime trails Riko, a young girl who wishes to explore the mysterious & great gaping chasm that runs to the depths of the Earth. In the series, the folks dedicated to revealing the Abyss’ mysteries are termed, Divers. And, the bravest amongst them are known by the name White Whistles.

Even though Riko is a novice, she plans to explore the depths of the Abyss which is when she gets to meet a mysterious robot. This robot flaunts a technology that has been engineered in a place that is far inside the Abyss.
Made In Abyss Anime Inspired Three Movies
Back when the anime adaptation premiered, it earned the critics’ approval. It was loved by fans for its amazingly intricate storytelling & exceptional worldbuilding. Not just that, the anime also bagged a massive fan following that transitioned into three movies as well as a second installment that aired on July 6, 2022.

As per TheCinemaholic, fans that await the renewal of the series might have to wait for a long time. Currently, Studio Kinema Citrus or other names associated with the production/distribution of the series haven’t commented on the future of the series. Both Season 1 and Season 2 made it to the top ranks of Myanimelist. Not just that, its reviews on several other platforms denote that the series is an exceptional creation in the anime world.
Made In Abyss Makers Currently Don’t Have Enough Manga Content
Given this positive reception, it would seem that renewing the series for another season is a no-brainer. However, the problem here is the absence of source material for makers to adapt from. The first two seasons have already covered 10 out of the 11 manga volumes available. So, unless the makers have enough content to work on, the series might be on hiatus for a long time.

Creator Akihito Tsukushi releases one manga volume per year. This means the anime team would have to wait until 2026 to confirm the show’s renewal. And, even if that happens, the production phase might take at least a year or more. Judging by the numbers, Made In Abyss Season 3 is likely to premiere sometime in 2027.
