‘Lookism’ Heads For Netflix: When & What To Expect

Netflix’s latest drama anime adaptation Lookism is soon to arrive on Netflix. The series trails the life of Park Hyung Seok who is unpopular and bullied in his school. This anime adaptation is inspired by a webtoon of the same name that was first serialized by Naver WEBTOON in November 2014. During the Netflix TUDUM event in 2022, the streaming platform announced several anime titles, and among them was Lookism.

South Korean Animation House Studio Mir Is Producing Lookism

The anime is being produced by Studio Mir which is a popular South Korean animation studio. Their past works include Voltron: Legendary Defender, Legend Of Korra, and Dota: Dragon’s Blood. An official trailer of the series was also released on YouTube. The trailer features a snippet of the series’ opening song that is sung by ATEEZ, a South Korean boy group with 8 members. As per What’s On Netflix, the series is slated to premiere on November 4, 2022.

However, Lookism isn’t the only webtoon that has received an anime adaptation by Netflix. In the past two years, the streaming platform’s anime adaptations include Noblesse, Tower Of God, and God Of High School. Moreover, the upcoming Netflix anime isn’t Lookism’s first adaptation. Back in 2019, a China-based production company developed a live-action version of this webtoon. Although the Chinese adaptation does work on the basic premise of the webtoon, it does follow the storyline intricately.

Lookism Isn’t Studio Mir’s First Anime Adaptation

Studio Mir was founded by Yu Jae-Myung in 2010. The animation director is popular for his work in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Netflix’s Lookism Talks About Bullying And Unfair Beauty Standards

Created by Park Tae-Joon, Lookism’s story revolved around the high-school student Park Hyeon-Seok. He regularly gets bullied because he doesn’t fit society’s conventional beauty standards. He wears glasses and is chubby. After he begs his mother to help him switch schools, he eventually makes it to Seoul only to discover that the bullying doesn’t end here.

However, one morning Park wakes up only to find himself looking very different in the mirror. He is muscular and slimmer with no need for glasses. Not just that, everyone’s attitude towards his new identity, Hyeong-Seok, takes a 180-degree turn. Moreover, he can easily switch between his two alternate identities as and when required. With time, he sees how society acts toward attractive people and discriminates against the ones that don’t fit the beauty standards.
