Netflix’s Marilyn Monroe movie, Blonde premiered at the Venice International Film Festival last week. Starring Ana de Armas from the Blade Runner 2049 fame, the movie entails Marilyn’s journey on the big screen. This highly-acclaimed movie is directed by Andrew Dominik known for his work on The Assassination Of Jesse James. Slated to premiere on Netflix on September 28, it’s rated NC-17 due to certain scenes that might not be suited for audiences below the age of 18.
Is Netflix’s Blonde Movie Suited For Viewers Below 18?
The three-hour film will also be available in select theaters from September 16, 2022. In a recent interview, the director Dominik also compared his latest creation to Raging Bull and Citizen Kane. However, given its NC-17 rating, the movie has already drawn some controversy even before its Netflix premiere. As per the director, the movie is rated suitable for audiences below 18 due to some sexual and graphic content including a scene of sexual assault.
Talking about the movie’s rating, Dominik said, “I can tell you a number of shows or movies that are way more explicit with a lot more sexual content than ‘Blonde’. But to tell this story, it is important to show all these moments in Marilyn’s life that made her end up the way that she did. It needed to be explained. Everyone knew we had to go to uncomfortable places. I wasn’t the only one.”
Blonde Details Marilyn Monroe’s Marriage On Big Screen
Blonde is a fictional take on the star Marilyn Monroe’s life starting from her childhood all the way to her final days. The movie is based on a 2000 novel written by Joyce Carol Oates comprised of 700+ pages. As per USA Today, the novel was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Both the movie and the book detail Monroe’s marriage to Joe DiMaggio (played by Bobby Cannavale), who is referred to as ‘The Ex-Athlete’.
It also reveals facts from her marriage to Arthur Miller (played by Adrien Brody), referred to as ‘The Playwright’. In the movie, Caspar Phillipson is also cast as John F. Kennedy and referred to as ‘The President.’ Initially, Blonde was adapted into a CBS 2001 miniseries with Poppy Montgomery as the lead character. It took Dominik more than a decade to get started with the big-screen version. Before de Armas was cast in the role in 2019, it was Jessica Chastain and then Naomi Watts who was considered for the lead roles.
Ana de Armas Reveals Details Of Her Audition For Blonde
The very same year she was cast as Marilyn Monroe, she also starred in Knives Out alongside Daniel Craig. Later on, she reunited with Daniel for James Bond’s latest movie No Time To Die released in 2021. In an interview, de Armas revealed, “I only had auditioned for Marilyn once & Andrew said ‘It’s you,’ but I had to audition for everyone else. The producers, the money people, I always have people I needed to convince. But I knew I could do it. Playing Marilyn was groundbreaking. A Cuban playing Marilyn Monroe, I wanted it so badly.”
Filming for Blonde started on the anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s passing. Some of the scenes were shot in locations where she lived and died.
