Yellowstone was sold on the name of Kevin Costner, but since the show arrived on Paramount+, it has become one of television’s most popular shows, with or without him.
With Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton, facing almost unspeakable odds each season, many fans have started to ask whether John will die in Yellowstone Season 5. When asked about this, Costner had a pointed statement about his character.
Kevin Costner on John’s Yellowstone fate
Kevin Costner spoke with Extra and part of the video is up on YouTube for fans. He clearly lets them know that he did not want to see John die in Yellowstone, but if it is best for the story, he understands that it would have to happen.
“Well, I don’t want to die,” Costner said. “There’s just too much to do, but in terms of this story I don’t know where that’s gonna go. You know, I haven’t really thought about that. Everybody dies, but it’s how you live.”
The interviewer then asked if Costner, as the main star of the show, has any idea on how the show will all end when it finally concludes.
“No, I don’t,” Costner answered. “Because I think probably in some way, we’re making it up even if we say what we know. If we say we know it, you know, is that really what it means? I think what comes on the page will be the thing that I look at.”
Kevin Costner hints at John’s future
He was also asked if he has any say in what happens to John Dutton in Yellowstone Season 5.
“Yeah, I think I could have some say,” Costner said. “I think that he’s been riding a really high level. I’ll say when I don’t want to do it anymore. I’ll say when I feel like it’s repeating it. And that will be the moment when I have authorship of what I do.”
While Costner said he doesn’t know if John will die soon, that last answer pretty much makes it clear that he isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Plus, he doesn’t seem ready to say goodbye to this world, and it sounds like that is his call.
The Yellowstone Season 5 trailer just hit and the cast of the show seemed more than excited about getting the season underway. Kevin Costner wrote, “who’s ready” while Jefferson White wrote, “best season yet.”
While John Dutton might not die this season, there are rumors that he could end up as the next governor of Montana. This could be a huge move for Dutton and set up a new twist in the already intriguing storyline.
Also, be on the lookout for some new romance between John and Piper Perabo’s Summer. “The love story is kicking into gear on Yellowstone. I know a lot of people watch it for the cowboys and the ranch, but I watch it for the love story,” Perabo said. “We’re turning up the heat. It’s been a hard couple of years, let’s turn up the heat for a minute.”
Yellowstone Season 5 premieres on November 13, 2022, on Paramount+. Will you be watching? Let us know in the comments.
