Netflix’s ‘My Father’s Dragon’ Fall Release Confirmed
Netflix’s upcoming 2D-animated movie, My Father’s Dragon, is based on a popular 1948 children’s novel of the same name. Authored by Ruth Stiles, the movie adaptation is being directed by Nora Twomey who is best known for The Breadwinner and The Secret of Kells. The animated movie is slated to premiere on the streaming platform in November 2022.
Netflix’s My Father’s Dragon Was Slated For A 2021 Release
The movie is co-produced by Cartoon Saloon, Netflix Animation, Parallel Films, and Mockingbird Pictures. Although the animated movie was originally slated for a 2021 release, it was pushed to November 2, 2022. This was done to adhere to Netflix’s criteria of releasing six animated movies per year.

The book, on which the movie is based, is also a recipient of the highly acclaimed Newbery Medal which recognizes its distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Coincidentally, two more winners of this award have also been adapted into children’s movies for Disney+. These movies are Flora & Ulysses and The One And Only Ivan.
Cartoon Saloon’s Nora Twomey Has Directed My Father’s Dragon
My Father’s Dragon is primarily being produced by Cartoon Saloon which is a small Irish animation studio. The company shot to fame in 2010 after a movie they produced, The Secret Of Kells, bagged an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Film.

Ever since the animation studio has created some of the best masterpieces. As per What’s On Netflix, their works have also received 5 Academy Award nominations. Their recent animation movie, Wolfwalkers, was also a big success and is currently available on Apple TV+.
While Cartoon Saloon’s Nora Twomey has directed this upcoming animation, the script is penned by Pixar alum Meg LeFauve of the Inside Out & The Good Dinosaur fame. Twomey has been credited for directing popular animated movies like Breadwinner and Song Of The Sea. She was also mentioned by Ted Sarandos in the latest Netflix earnings call as one of the best animators in the world.

The summary of the novel reads:
“A young boy runs away from home to rescue an abused baby dragon held captive to serve as a free twenty-four-hour seven-days-a-week ferry for the lazy wild animals living on Wild Island. He’s got a long tail and yellow and blue stripes. His horn and eyes and the bottoms of his feet are bright red, and he has gold-colored wings. “
Stranger Things Fame Gaten Matarazzo Is A Part Of The Netflix Animation
The cast for this new animated movie also brings in a popular name from the Stranger Things fame, Gaten Matarazzo. Apart from this, the cast also includes Dianne Wiest from The Birdcage fame and Chris O’Dowd from The IT Crowd fame. Whoopi Goldberg and Ian McShane are also a part of the upcoming animated movie.

My Father’s Dragon will first premiere at the 66th BFI London Film Festival in October 2022. This will be followed by its Netflix premiere in November 2022. Additionally, the movie will also receive a limited theatrical run in select theaters after its Netflix premiere.
