According to Deadline, Richard Roat’s family confirmed the actor died on August 5th in Orange County, CA. Presently, no other details involving his cause of death available.
A look at his life and career
Richard Roat was born in Hartford, CT on July 3, 1933. He dabbled a bit with a few small roles before being cast to play Dr. Jerry Chandler in the NBC soap opera named The Doctors in 1962. He held on to the role of Dr. Jerry Chandler for over 170 episodes during the soap’s first year on television. As fans of the soap know, The Doctors went on to air for 20 years.
In 1965, Richard made a guest appearance on The Fugitive. Things really picked up for Richard Roat’s acting career during the following decade. During the ’70s, the actor held many memorable roles in Hawaii Five-O, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, Police Story, Fantasy Island, Happy Days, Charlie’s Angeles, Columbo, Cannon, and Kojak. During that same decade, the actor also held smaller roles in the following titles Westworld, American Hot Wax, and Corvette Summer.
Richard also appeared in two episodes during Season 1 of The Golden Girls. Fans of the series may recall he played the gentleman that died while being intimate with Betty White.
During the 80s and 90s, the actor also landed roles in several well-known titles including 7th Heaven, 3rd Rock from the Sun, The Nanny, Melrose Place, Blossom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Night Court, Baywatch, Murphy’s Law, Matlock, ALF, St. Elsewhere, and many others.
