Todd & Julie Chrisley Say Evidence Was Surpressed, Demand New Trial
Weeks ahead of their sentencing trial, Todd and Julie Chrisley aren’t finished fighting to overturn their conviction. Per an exclusive by Radar Online, the Chrisley Knows Best couple have officially requested that the judge toss out the conviction and grant them a new trial and another chance.
The outlet claims to have obtained court documents that suggest this isn’t just a last-ditch effort from the Chrisley couple. Turns out, Todd and Julie Chrisley have accused the government of presenting the jury with a “false testimony” and they don’t believe they ever should’ve been convicted.
Julie and Todd Chrisley ask for new trial and tossing of conviction
It was back in June of this year that Todd and Julie Chrisley were convicted of bank fraud and tax evasion. As fans know, the couple could end up with as many as three decades behind bars. Their sentencing trial was slated to take place in October. Radar Online recently learned the couple are hoping to avoid the sentencing trial by getting the conviction tossed in favor of a new trial. Presently, the prosecutors insist the couple defrauded banks in Atlanta for $30 million.
Within their new request, Todd and Julie Chrisley argue the government called IRS Revenue Officer, Betty Carter, to the stand and pressured her to give false testimony. The Chrisley Knows Best couple claims the IRS agent “lied about the Chrisleys owing taxes for years when she knew no taxes were due.”
This testimony had the effect of falsely painting the Chrisleys as untruthful, likely to commit other forms of fraud, and evading the tax payments alleged in the indictment. When pressed, Officer Carter swore that she had confirmed her claims in the IRS’s internal system the day before her testimony, and those records showed that the Chrisleys owed taxes for at least years 2014, 2015, and 2016. This was all false.”
According to the lawyer’s motion obtained by the outlet, Julie and Todd revealed Betty reached out to their accountant shortly after the trial concluded. She admitted that Todd and Julie didn’t owe the IRS any money. This information was not made available to the jury. Todd and Julie Chrisley’s lawyer notes the jury was presented with a faux impression of the Chrisley couple.
The lawyer penned in the motion: “Instead, the jury was left with the false impression that the Chrisleys continued to avoid paying taxes for these years.”
The lawyer also argues a lot of the evidence was obtained while violating the Fourth Amendment and should be suppressed.
