News broke a little less than a week ago that both Disney+ and Hulu were planning to raise their prices. The announcement reassured subscribers the most efficient way to save money was to bundle both streaming services. Learning the details of the price hike on Disney+, fuming subscribers have taken to social media to criticize the decision. Sadly, this decision didn’t come with a small price hike. And, subscribers of Disney+ are threatening to cancel and return to cable.
Breakdown of the price hike
According to CBR, the basic subscription plan (which includes ads) will cost $7.99 a month. There is no option for an annual subscription. The premium subscription plan (which includes no ads) will see a price of $10.99 a month or $109.99 annually. This is a $3 price hike for monthly subscribers and a $40 price hike for annual subscribers.
On social media, the big debate subscribers are having at this point is whether the streaming service is justified in a price hike of 37 percent.
Is Disney+ making a mistake with this decision?
Whether or not Disney+ has made a mistake in the decision to hike their prices 37 percent is a heavily discussed topic across social media right now. One subscriber noted the price hike was “in poor taste” given the current state of the economy.
I won’t lie. I love #Disney, but raising the #DisneyPlus price given the current economic climate was in extremely poor taste. Something so many people rely on for entertainment at home during these tough times when we have like 3 pandemics going at once…”

Here’s what other subscribers had to say:
- “As expected. Disney Plus is getting a steep price hike in December, just after the initial 3-year paid upfront plans are expiring.”
- “Idk how #DisneyPlus is gonna raise prices for their subscriptions thinking it won’t cause backlash. People are hating Netflix and unsubscribing because of price increase, etc. #Disney is going to go in the same direction if they don’t learn increasing the price will lose subs.”
Not everyone thinks this is a mistake
There are plenty of subscribers on various social media platforms that admit they understand the need to raise the price. Likewise, many subscribers have said the streaming service is well worth $10.99 and they will definitely continue to pay for it.

As many subscribers have pointed out, Netflix and Hulu have both raised their prices several different times. Price hikes are never met with very happy subscribers. The streaming services do lose some subscribers when they hike their prices. They, however, have many many more subscribers who just pay the higher prices and move on.
