‘Love, Death + Robots’ Renewed For Season 4: What You Need To Know

Netflix, News, Streaming

Netflix renewed the animated series Love, Death + Robots for a fourth season. Here is a look at everything you need to know about the upcoming season.

What is the Love, Death + Robots Season 4 release date?

The fact that Netflix renewed Love, Death + Robots is great news for fans of science fiction and adult animated series. The show picked up two Emmy nominations this year. They were for “Outstanding Short Form Animated Program” and “Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation.” Therefore, this is a nice reward from Netflix.

Netflix confirmed the renewal with a short five-second video on Twitter with emojis for each word of the title. It also included the words “Volume F***!” on the screen. In the caption, the streaming giant wrote, “Love, Death + Robots Volume IV is a GO!”

With the renewal just happening, it will be a while before anyone will see it. Different animation studios create each episode, and each has its own unique look and feel as a result. This means it could get finished quicker since it isn’t just one studio making the entire season. Yet animation still takes a lot of time. Season 1 hit in March 2019. The second season arrived in May 2021 and the third in May 2022. Expect the fourth to arrive next summer, possibly in May 2023 to keep the schedule.

What is Love, Death + Robots about?

Love, Death + Robots is a series of animated short films that deal with what the title suggests. It’s a science fiction world of robots and the themes of love and death. What makes it unique is that the episodes are all from different animation studios around the world and approach the themes in unique ways.

David Fincher (Fight Club, The Social Network) served as executive producer and showrunner in the first season. Unfortunately, he stepped down after that. Tim Miller (Deadpool) created the show and Jennifer Yuh Nelson is the “Supervising Director” of the Netflix series now. Fincher and Miller still serve as executive producers, along with Jennifer Miller and Joshua Donen.

Netflix released a synopsis: “Terror, imagination and beauty combine in nine new episodes which stretch from uncovering an ancient evil to a comedic apocalypse, telling startling short stories of fantasy, horror and science-fiction with trademark wit and visual invention.”

While Netflix announced no studios, one that is returning is Tim Miller’s Blur Studio, which created eight episodes so far over the three seasons, including Bad Traveling and Swarm last season. While the first season had 18 episodes, likely expecting there would be no others, the second and third seasons had eight and nine episodes, so expect that to be the total for Love, Death + Robots Season 4. Also expect some familiar names to contribute stories, as science fiction heavyweights Joe Lansdale and John Scalzi have contributed multiple stories in the first three seasons.
