When Will Ayumu Make His Move? is a beautiful rom-com anime that recently premiered on July 8, 2022. To date, the manga has released 5 episodes, with the 6th to premiere soon. Animated by Silver Link & directed by Mirai Minato, this series revolves around the central characters Ayumu Tanaka and Urushi Yaotome. While Ayumu is a first-year high school student, Urushi is his senpai. They are both members of the shogi club, competing with one another to win the game.

Although Urushi almost always beats Ayumu in the game, the undeclared love between the two has the fans hooked on this anime. Although Urushi does know that Ayumu likes her, she fails to get him to admit it.

As per CBR.com, this enticing rom-com derives bits and pieces of the storyline from another renowned anime, Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War. Both anime series have their storyline spun amid high school students in love. However, in both, they are locked in a battle of wits making the love confession a far cry.

Regardless, Urushi and Ayumu spend a lot of quality time together when they aren’t indulging in a series of shogi battles of wits. When Will Ayumu Make His Move? Episode 5 highlighted how close they could be when the mind games are set aside. As compared to other episodes in the series, the previous episode was a vacation from the continuous battle of wits between the two.
Ayumu Gets A Peek At Urushi’s Fun Childhood
As Ayumu and Urushi explore their friendship during the winter break, they also get a chance to relax and enjoy their daily lives. Moreover, Episode 5 is strictly just about having fun and nothing series for them. They do indulge in a shogi game but only for fun with nothing at stake. Even though the duo is at their best when they face each other in the game, a quick break from the daily, monotonous routine is a welcome change in the anime story.

The last episode also provided a great insight into what the duo is like outside the context of their shogi club. They also explore various places, including the restaurant Urushi’s late grandfather used to visit daily. At the restaurant, the owner lets Ayumu in on several stories from Urushi’s childhood. Now, he appreciates the fact that Urushi is much more than a person behind the shogi board but a whole other person with a fun life.

However, Ayumu doesn’t reveal a lot about himself since he loves to be his cool self. Later that night, he has a video chat session with his love interest, hinting at their increasing closeness. However, Ayumu does like to keep things to himself, thinking he might end up boring Urushi with his childhood stories. Both Episode 5 and Episode 4 served as the bridge that helped fill the gaps between Ayumu and Urushi’s relationship.
