‘My 600-Lb. Life’: Is Dr. Now’s Scale To Blame Sometimes?

For 10 seasons, My 600-Lb. Life fans have watched patients from all different walks of life approach Dr. Now and ask for his help. For many, the famous bariatric surgeon is their last hope. Many patients have had a lot of success with Dr. Now’s program, but others aren’t as lucky.

Season 8’s Joyce Del Viscovo was one of the patients who didn’t fare as well as other patients. When Joyce first made her appearance on My 600-Lb. Life, she was over 750 lbs and only stood at 4’11”. Due to her short stature, the extra weight took an enormous toll on her body.

Joyce definitely struggled throughout the course of her episode. But instead of accepting responsibility, she blamed the specific scale in Dr. Now’s office. Keep reading to learn more.

Over the course of her episode, Joyce did manage to lose 134 lbs. However, Dr. Now was not at all thrilled with this progress and encouraged Joyce to put more effort into the program.

Like many other guests on My 600-Lb. Life, Joyce had suffered through serious abuse as a child. She turned to food as a way to cope with the difficult feelings. Over the years, that had some heavy consequences for her body. Joyce hit a turning point and realized she needed Dr. Now’s help if she wanted to curb her addiction and get on the right track to a healthier life.

However, Joyce had an extremely difficult time keeping up with Dr. Now’s orders. She wasn’t willing to make serious dietary changes and wasn’t interested in physical therapy either. Needless to say, she didn’t make the progress that Dr. Now wanted her to make.

Is Dr. Now’s scale actually broken?

During a weigh-in at Dr. Now’s office, the scale revealed Joyce gained 58 lbs instead of losing weight. Sadly, Joyce failed to take responsibility and instead blamed it on the scale. A follow-up weigh-in revealed she gained another 12 lbs. In Joyce’s mind, she believed this confirmed her suspicions about the broken scale.

When Joyce’s episode concludes, she opted to leave the program and believed that it just wasn’t working for her. The My 600-Lb. Life guest firmly believed that Dr. Now’s program was to blame, not her addiction.

Scales do malfunction from time to time, but Dr. Now sees patients each and every day. It probably would have been immediately apparent if the scale broke at some point.

The truth is that Dr. Now’s weight loss program is very strict. Not everyone is able to tackle the challenge and make the significant lifestyle changes necessary to get bariatric surgery.

There isn’t much information publically available on Joyce today. But viewers hope she turned her life around and made healthier choices once she left the show.
