The AGT judges got a treat from an 18-year-old named Ava Swiss. She auditioned during Tuesday’s episode. Ava Swiss performed her rendition of “Remember” by Lauren Daigle. The song holds a lot of emotion for her. Ava revealed that she survived the school shooting in Oxford, Michigan that took place in November 2021. Read on to learn more about her story and her audition.

Ava Swiss’ emotional AGT debut

Prior to her AGT audition, Ava shared her backstory with the judges. The brave teen wants to choose love in the face of hate. Though she survived, she never wanted to set foot in that school again. It was hard for Ava to wake up in the morning and go back as if it was normal.

Judge Simon Cowell showed a softer side of himself. He asked Ava how she’s been feeling since the school shooting occurred. The aspiring singer said it wasn’t easy at first. Thankfully, she had her brother by her side. Together, both of them overcame their fears and attended school in person again.

“It’s been hard. I remember my brother and I, we were talking to each other and we said, ‘There’s no way we’re ever stepping foot back in the school,'” Ava admitted. “But we’ve actually been in person in the school for about two months now, so things are getting better.”

She then performed her powerful rendition of the Christian song. You can feel the raw emotion in Ava’s voice as she sang. Her performance received a standing ovation from the judges, as well as the audience. Ava received four yeses to continue to the semifinals.

The stone-faced Brit softened up after her audition. He said that will become one of the most memorable auditions in AGT history. The music manager also complimented her on her beautiful voice. Simon was especially touched by Ava’s audition.

“For me, this is one of those auditions I’ll never forget,” Simon continued. “I really have so much respect for you, and on top of that, you’ve got a great voice. You’re really somebody who I’m so happy to have met.”

Ava spoke to People after her AGT audition. She calls the moment “surreal,” as she’s still in shock over what just happened. The young hopeful recalls watching the show when she was younger and wanting to try out for it. She had no idea that she would actually make it through the show.

“I mean, all my life, all my childhood I watched the show and I always kind of dreamed that I would be able to be on that stage one day,” Ava told People. “So when I was there, and then on top of it, getting all of the positive feedback, I felt very, very proud of myself… It was an overwhelming feeling.”

Ava felt inspired by her hometown. She wanted to represent them in a positive light. As she continues AGT, she hopes that she will keep spreading that message to the viewers at home. She will continue to choose love in the face of hate.

“Love is stronger than hate,” Ava said. “Lots of people still can’t fully heal, especially the four families. It’s obviously a lot harder for them. But with time, things do get better with hope and with support and with love from other people.”
