For those not familiar with One Piece, the manga was created by Eiichiro Oda. It made its first debut in the Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997. Since then, it has become one of the best-selling and most popular mangas of all time. There are an estimated half a billion copies of the story in circulation around the world right now.

To celebrate, the team behind the live-action series shared some of their favorite parts of the program. Showrunner Steve Maeda, also known for working on The X-Files, talked about his favorite character: Usopp. For Maeda, Usopp is the most relatable character in the series.

Fellow showrunner, Matt Owens, on the other hand, stated his favorite character from the show was Trafalgar Law. “He has the coolest power,” Owens says in the video. “Like all of the main characters in One Piece, he has a really sad backstory.”

More recently, Oda announced that the series would be coming to an end. He revealed that the next saga would be Luffy’s last leg of the journey. However, Oda is also one of the executive producers for the Netflix live-action adaptation. So, he isn’t done with the characters or the story quite yet.

Netflix’s Live-Action One Piece

The live-action series is being produced by Tomorrow Studios, the same production company that was heading the live-action Cowboy Bebop (now canceled). It has been two years since the One Piece live-action series was first announced. The streaming giant revealed more information about the series during Netflix’s Geeked Week this year.

Not only did Netflix confirm that the series was being filmed, but they also announced cast members and discussed how filming for the show was going in South Africa. As filming for the live-action One Piece continues in Cape Town, Netflix has provided several behind-the-scenes looks at the cast, crew, and set. Fans of the manga have gotten a look at some of the most-anticipated show sets, including pirate ships and more.

None of it would have come together without Oda’s storytelling and hard work over the last 26 years though. Here is a look at what the team behind the show had to say about the 25th anniversary of One Piece.
