‘Powerpuff Girls’ Popular Series Coming Back, How?
The Powerpuff Girls is making a comeback. Lately, there has been a lot of talk about the live-action series, and most of it hasn’t been good. However, there have been talks to bring back the popular animated series that originally aired on Cartoon Network.
Craig McCracken has plans to reboot two of his beloved shows — The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. The first show exploded in popularity during the ’90s. The American series is focused on a group of female superheroes.
The television series ended in 2005 with a total of 78 episodes and two spinoff shows. On Monday, July 18, Warner Bros. Discovery teased that the classic series will return with a whole-new reboot. Read on to learn more and how this could happen.
The Powerpuff Girls could see new life
The success of the original Powerpuff Girls series led to the craze that took over the late ’90s and early ’00s. It also spawned several spinoffs, including an anime series. Soon enough, the series had its own empire, which included comics, a home video collection, merchandise, and video games. The Powerpuff Girls premiered on Cartoon Network in 1998 and was a part of early aughts nostalgia for millennials.
Hanna-Barbera Studios has struck up a deal with McCracken. They believe that the brand is still strong enough to bring back old fans and win over a whole new fanbase. They’re also developing the pre-schooled reboot of Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.
“The Hanna-Barbera homecoming of Craig was an opportunity we could not pass up,” Sam Register, President of Cartoon Network Studios, Warner Bros. Animation & Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, revealed in a statement, via Meaww.com. “Along with his unparalleled sense of fun and imagination, he’s bringing two of his greatest works in The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends and we are so excited for these characters to be a part of the new legacy taking shape at the studio.”
A live-action reboot is still in talks
The Powerpuff Girls last got a reboot in 2016, but it was not created by Craig McCracken. It only ran for three seasons. The reboot introduced a fourth Powerpuff Girl, Bliss, who was also Townsville’s first Black crimefighter. She was unveiled in 2017’s “Power of Four” special.
In 2020, CW announced the live-action reboot called Powerpuff. The pilot was filmed in 2021 and movement has been slow. The series will star Chloe Bennett as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault as Buttercup. Bennett dropped out of the show, which is still in active development. A premiere date hasn’t been announced.
A premiere date for the Powerpuff Girls animated reboot hasn’t been revealed yet either. It’s also unclear whether it will air on Cartoon Network or on a streaming service. There are many questions about the reboot, including if it will stick to the original three or if it will include Bliss as well.
