Jill & Derick Dillard Reveal Sentimental Meaning Behind Baby’s Name
Jill and Derick Dillard recently welcomed their third baby to the world and are now spilling all of the details behind his name. The couple announced their son’s birth on Monday, July 11, which was four days after his July 7th arrival. Keep reading to get all of the details about his name and why it means so much to the Dillards.
In a blog post on July 11, Jill and Derick revealed that their baby has arrived and that he and Jill are doing well. He was born a little bit early, so he will be in the hospital for some time. But Derick reassured fans that he’s healthy.
The former Counting On stars named their son Frederick Michael and will call him Freddy. They noted that Frederick means “peaceful ruler,” while Michael means “gift from God.”
Jill and Derick Dillard shocked fans by ditching their original plan for naming their kids. They initially said that they were going to spell out “Israel” with the first initial of each of their kids’ names.
They already have a son named Israel and a son named Samuel. They miscarried a baby and used the name River. So, fans thought this baby’s name would begin with an “A” to continue spelling “Israel.”

In their blog post, Jill and Derick spilled all of the details about the name they chose for their third son.
Part of the post reads:
“The name Frederick also holds special meaning for us since it’s Derick’s name with ‘Fre’ added to the front, to make ‘Fre-derick.’ Similarly, Derick’s name is a variation of his late dad’s name, Rick, that his parents created by adding ‘de’ to the front of Rick to spell, ‘de’-‘rick,’ literally meaning son ‘of’ (de) Rick. We were excited to settle on the name Frederick and incorporate both Derick’s and his dad’s name, by just adding ‘Fre’ to the beginning of Derick’s name.”
In case you didn’t know, Derick Dillard’s father passed away after suffering from a heart attack on January 18, 2008, according to the 19 Kids & Counting Wiki. At the time, Derick was just 19 years old.
