‘Sister Wives’: Google Kicks Dead Name, Supports Leon Brown

When a person publically comes out as transgender, they often pick a new name for themselves. That’s exactly what Sister Wives star Leon Brown did when they came out just a few days ago.

Leon said they would only answer to “Leon” or “Leo” from now on and that they would be using they/them pronouns. Many fans and family members rallied around Leon and said they would be happy to support them.

And it doesn’t stop there — even Google seems to be behind Leon. Keep reading to learn more.

Google shows respect for Leon Brown’s new identity as a transperson

When a trans person chooses a new name, it’s respectful to only use that new name. Using their birth name, or “dead name,” is considered extremely disrespectful and ignores their trans identity. That’s why it’s such a big deal that Google removed Leon’s dead name. When fans google the dead name, they will get results for “Leon Brown” instead.

This is pretty big news for Leon. Google made a very conscious choice in choosing to recognize Leon’s new identity. Hopefully, this will influence others to follow Google’s lead and embrace Leon’s new identity.

Reddit even noticed the change.

“So I had brain fog over the number of kids Kody had so googled it,” the original poster wrote. “Still have 19 in my head. Anyway I was pleased [and] surprised that [they] have Leon as Leon and not their deadname. Made me happy well done.”

In recent years, trans people have received more recognition than in previous years. But the work isn’t done yet. Google’s move is a step in the right direction, but there’s still a lot left to do.

Will the rest of the Browns support their family member?

Many members of Leon’s family were immediately supportive when they publicly announced their transition. Leon’s mother Meri and sister Ysabel were immediately supportive. Their partner Audrey Kriss is also trans, so Leon got a lot of support from them as well.

So far, Kody Brown hasn’t said much about his child’s transition. Sister Wives fans worry that he might not be so accepting due to his conservative viewpoints. Leon and Paedon Brown also notoriously don’t get along, so Paedon also might not be so supportive.

But the good news is that Leon Brown does have many people in their life that love them and wish them well. Since Leon and Audrey stepped away from the show, it’s not very likely they will make future Sister Wives appearances. But fans and supporters can follow the couple’s transition journey on social media for the time being.
