Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most successful television shows of all time. It’s a “kid’s show for all ages” that’s even broken world records. The result of the show’s success is multiple attempts at capitalizing or reigniting the passion for the original series. Both attempts thus far have seen varying results.
The Legend Of Korra is a spiritual successor series that many fans love but wasn’t as commercially successful. M. Night Shyamalan’s live-action The Last Airbender movie is thought of by many to be one of the worst movies of all time.
So the future of the Avatar: The Last Airbender series is in a confusing place. But we now know that there are multiple works of animation in the pipeline.
The New Avatar Films
Avatar Studios is the official studio responsible for the future of the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The best news is that both of the original showrunners are on board to helm the future.
On a recent podcast, Bryan Konietzko spoke about multiple projects being in the pipeline. The projects are all set in the world of Avatar and each has a different feel.
Simultaneously, Netflix has its own Avatar show in development right now. It’s a live-action series that’s set to release before any of the animated films. Both of the original series’ creators left this show before it began filming. Their apparent reason for departure was “creative differences” with Netflix.
For many fans, this spells disaster for the Netflix series. It’s DiMartino and Konietzko’s vision and creativity that truly made the original series so special. Both seem much more comfortable with their current positions at Avatar Studios. Hopefully, this means the best Avatar content is yet to come.
The Future (And Maybe The Past?) Of The Series
Not much specific detail has been given as to what the upcoming animated films are actually about. Konietzko said that each film has a very unique look and feel. It’s possible that these films will delve into other Avatars from other time periods.
The original show sets up a (mostly) never-ending cycle of reincarnation for the Avatar. This gives endless possibilities for different Avatars to deal with the world’s problems in different eras. Whatever the nature of the films is, the fans are already boiling with excitement.
There is no official release date for any Avatar animation at the moment. The live-action show for Netflix is seeing rumors for an early 2023 release date at the moment. But there is no confirmation for anything. So we’ll just have to wait and see.
