Rebel Wilson was forced to reveal her sexuality to the world. Last week, the Aussie film star went Instagram official with her same-sex partner. This news came as shock and awe to her fans and followers. Most of them were happy to hear this news — especially during Pride month.

Unfortunately, this move was not her decision. Wilson wanted to keep her relationship a secret from the world. If she hadn’t come out, a scathing tabloid would’ve done it for her. Sydney Morning Herald columnist Andrew Hornery published an article explaining that he wanted her team to comment on her relationship with Ramona Agruma.

Rebel Wilson breaks silence on coming out on social media

The Pitch Perfect star admitted that it was “a very hard situation.” She broke her silence in response to the fans who were upset with Sydney Morning Herald. Some of them have been calling for the columnist’s firing. They argue that Hornery shouldn’t have forced the star to come out.

Yet, he didn’t back down. Hornery only gave Wilson “two days to comment.” She decided to come out to her fans on Instagram. Hornery called her decision “underwhelming” to post a photo with Agruma. He was upset that Wilson took control of what was a difficult situation to come out on her own.

“Thanks for your comments, it was a very hard situation but trying to handle it with grace,” Rebel Wilson simply tweeted.

Last week, Wilson shared a photo of herself with the sustainable clothing designer. The two looked as if they were on a date at an event. Wilson coyly made it clear that they were more than friends.

“I thought I was searching for a Disney Prince, but maybe what I really needed all this time was a Disney Princess #loveislove,” Rebel Wilson captioned the post.

Sydney Morning Herald columnist apologizes

Many have spoken out about Sydney’s scathing column. Most of the backlash was from fans of Rebel Wilson and members of the LGBTQ community. However, the writers of the Sydney Morning Herald defend Hornery and think he did nothing wrong. Editor Bevan Shields defended the newspaper’s “honest” approach to reporting.

Shortly after the story went viral and Hornery got backlash, he issued an apology to Rebel Wilson in an op-ed piece. He admitted that he made a “mistake” and that he’s still learning from them. What’s interesting is that Hornery is a member of the LGBTQ community. He didn’t think what he was doing was wrong at the time.

“I genuinely regret that Rebel has found this hard. That was never my intention,” Hornery wrote. “But I see she has handled it all with extraordinary grace. As a gay man, I’m well aware of how deeply discrimination hurts. The last thing I would ever want to do is to inflict that pain on someone else.”

He even noted that his editors “mishandled steps in our approach.” Hornery claims that he never tried to threaten Rebel Wilson to come out. He feels that he was trying to make a conversation about her sexuality. However, it’s not the best way to go about it.

The original column has been deleted with a retraction in its place. It wasn’t Rebel Wilson’s intent to come out. She wanted to do it in her own time, on her own terms. If she ever felt the need to.
