Michelle Duggar & Jessa Seewald’s Heartbreaking Talk Resurfaces

A clip from a 2014 episode of 19 Kids & Counting resurfaced online this week, revealing a conversation between Jessa and Michelle. You can watch the video here.
In the video, Michelle and Jessa are talking about her courtship with Ben. At this point, Ben and Jessa had been together for a few months.
Jessa admits to her mother, “So he’s like super-emotional like a feeling kind of person and I’m really not, you know that. I’m kind of just like, cut and dry, and so he’s always texting me like the sweetest things.”
Michelle Duggar then offered her some words of wisdom. The mother of 19 said, “Even though I know that typically you just are real, you know, plain and simple about things, you probably should say something like ‘Oh Ben, that is so sweet, oh thank you!'”
Then, she added, “However he expresses love is probably the way that he receives it as well. And on your part, you probably will practice learning how to express that love language that he needs to hear from you to him. And it’s a learning process.”
Fans are heartbroken by the lack of a mother-daughter relationship.
In response to the video, Duggar fans and critics are talking about the lack of relationship between the mother and daughter. Someone points out something Michelle Duggar mentioned, writing, “Nothing like ‘visiting’ with your own children who live in the same house as you.”
Someone else chimes in, “I also thought that was heartbreaking.”
Others are discussing how sad it is that Jessa is being encouraged to change her personality for Ben. Someone points out that Jessa is having to act a certain way just to please him. Another mentions that Michelle is treating Jessa’s personality like it’s a “defect.”
Despite Ben and Jessa’s difference while courting, they are married and have four kids today. So, something must have gone right.

No, she’s not telling Jessa that she has to “change herself”. She’s telling her that in a relationship it’s important to recognize each other’s love languages and that it’s important to communicate how you are feeling. I just recently rewatched that season. Obviously their relationship is working out so far.
Great advice the mom is giving her daughter. It is in a book called The Five Love Languages. I started doing this with my own husband. It has brought our relationship to a better level. The point of the book is that not everyone receives love the same way.
