Viewers of My 600-Lb. Life have often discussed relationships with their children and spouses. It is hard to understand how your partner could allow their significant other to get to that point. Are all marriages on the show doomed? Here’s what fans are saying.

Spouses Supporting Unhealthy Habits

Some fans of  My 600-Lb. Life take to Reddit to discuss the show pretty regularly. One Reddit user recently posed an interesting question, “Why don’t some of the men want their wife to loose [sic] weight?” They went on to discuss that a lot of the time it seems like the men on the show don’t want their wives to lose weight at all. Specifically, they brought up Betty Jo and Zsalynn, whose husbands seemed to oppose their weight loss.

Why, the Redditor asked. In theory, losing weight will save their lives and enable them to do more around the house. Other people were quick to jump in and comment.

“Zsalynn’s husband had a fat fetish,” one person said. A few other people thought that may be the case with many of the husbands on My 600-Lb. Life. Fat fetishes and feeding fetishes are common among the husbands that appear on the show, according to the discussion.

A number of Redditors chimed in and thought that a lot of the husbands wanted to continue to keep complete control over their wives. Generally speaking, their wives are easier to manipulate and control when they are heavier and in poor health. It is also possible, a few people theorized, that they are worried that when their wives lose weight they will leave them. So, are the marriages on the show doomed?

Are ‘My 600-Lb. Life’ Relationships Doomed?

It depends on the situation. Undoubtedly, some of the relationships come out on the other end stronger than ever before. However, some participants fail to lose weight and continue on destructive paths, oftentimes backed by their spouses. The toxic and codependent behavior alone is enough to end most relationships.

Getting healthy doesn’t seem to be an easy decision to make though. The people who do what they need to lose weight seemingly pay with their relationships. If they go through with weight loss surgery and slim down, their chances of divorce skyrocket. This is especially true if the person was overweight or obese when the relationship began. After bariatric surgery, there is an 80 to 85% chance of their marriage ending in divorce within two years.

That being said, bariatric surgery is often life-saving for the individuals who appear on My 600-Lb. Life. Even if it seems like their marriage is doomed by going under the knife, it could very possibly be what saves their life.

What do you think, are the marriage on the show destined to end in divorce no matter what?
