Why Was Matthew Morrison Fired From ‘SYTYCD’?
Why was Matthew Morrison fired from SYTYCD? Fans speculate what the Glee alum did to lose his job.
Former Glee star joins Fox dance competition as host
Reality TV dance competition fans rejoiced earlier this year when Fox announced they were bringing So You Think You Can Dance back to the schedule. The popular reality show last aired more than two years ago. Production was temporarily on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Auditions were held in various locations around the U.S. in March of 2022. The new season premiered on Fox on May 18 with new judges.
Fox previously announced that Glee star Matthew Morrison, television personality JoJo Siwa, and Stephen “tWitch” Boss would be the judges for Season 17.
JoJo Siwa recently competed on Dancing With The Stars. “tWitch” competed on Season 4 of SYTYCD.
Long-time judge Nigel Lythgoe wasn’t asked back for the new season. Cat Deeley is still the host of the Fox dance competition.
Matthew Morrison’s stint as judge didn’t last long, though.
Matthew Morrison fired from SYTYCD
On Friday, May 27, news broke that Matthew Morrison had been fired from SYTYCD. Deadline was the first to report the shocking news. The outlet shared an exclusive statement from the Broadway star about his exit.
Morrison expressed his regret over leaving the show so quickly. He called his short stint an “incredible honor.”
As for the reason of his firing, the statement simply said he broke “production protocol” without going into detail.
Fans think THIS is the real reason for the firing
Matthew Morrison’s abrupt exit from SYTYCD and oddly worded statement raised eyebrows among fans of the show. A thread on Reddit about his firing quickly turned into fan speculation about the real reason.
An unnamed source told Us Weekly that Morrison’s error was a “minor infraction.” However, his statement has people wondering if there’s more to the story. Redditors particularly honed in on the American Horror Story alum’s claim that he couldn’t be a fair judge.
While the show just premiered on Fox, Morrison’s statement revealed that the show was down to the 12 finalists that he helped select.
“After filming the audition rounds for the show and completing the selection of the 12 finalists, I did not follow competition production protocols, preventing me from being able to judge the competition fairly.” – Matthew Morrison, Deadline.
Social media sleuths took to Reddit to dissect the statement.

There were several comments speculating that the Glee star may have had an inappropriate relationship with one of the competitors.
“What this says to me is that he got close to a contestant,” one allegation read.
“…he didn’t try to flirt with or sleep with one of the barely-eighteens, did he?” another wrote.
Some recalled past accusations against the actor. For one, people brought up that he once dated his much-younger Glee co-star Lea Michele.
His engagement to Selling Sunset star Chrishell Stause ended amid cheating rumors.
He also faced backlash for his performance as The Grinch in NBC’s The Grinch Musical.
One person on the Reddit thread notes that the actor often gets the blame for the creepy behavior of Will Schuester on Glee.
At this point, Matthew Morrison hasn’t spoken about his firing aside from his original statement to Deadline. Fox plans to bring in another judge, with many fans hoping for Nigel’s return.
