Love Island AJ Bunker shared juicy production secrets. She revealed why the contestants wear sunglasses in bed and never get filmed while eating. The UK version is slightly different from the U.S. version. In the American series, the contestants wear sleep masks in bed and often eat on camera.
But, that’s not the case with the racy series that takes place across the pond. The UK series broke records by racking up 3.3 million viewers. The contestants themselves have millions of followers on social media. AJ is revealing the secrets of the show and what really goes on behind the scenes.
Love Islander AJ Bunker shares her secrets
AJ Bunker sat down for an exclusive interview with The Sun. She appeared in Season 7 of Love Island. The model revealed why the contestants wear sunglasses upon waking up in the morning and why they don’t wear watches. Bunker also revealed whether the dating show is scripted.
The Love Island producers approached AJ on Facebook. They first reached out to her five years ago, but she turned them down because she was in a relationship at the time. Last year, they reached out to her once again. They asked her if she was comfortable with hooking up with men on television.
AJ wasn’t comfortable with the idea since she “grew-up Catholic.” She says she’s “an open book” who’s not shy when it comes to revealing “all cheating exes” from her “horrific past.” During the process, the TV producers quizzed AJ about her dating history.
“They asked me how I would catch a guy’s attention — I said I would approach him because in my eyes you’ve got to risk it for a chocolate biscuit,” the Love Island alum told The Sun. “I think they chose me as a bombshell because I don’t mind chatting up a guy even if he was attached. They based it on my personality.”
Is Love Island scripted?
AJ confirms that the show is “not 100% scripted but producers nudge you.” That’s to get more drama happening in the villa. In the past, fans speculated whether Love Island is real or staged for better drama. From the moment the contestants are flown to Majorca, they have to give up their phones and watches.
There are also no clocks in the room. They filmed “really late at night” since it doesn’t get dark in Spain “until late in the evening.” AJ was also asked why Love Islanders wear sunglasses upon waking up in the morning. It’s not because they’re hiding their dark under-eye circles.
It’s because they are “woken by a massive, bright light.” They also avoid eating on the show so viewers can avoid hearing everyone chew. While they’re “not allowed candy or bad fast food,” they’ll get treats if they’re good. The Love Islanders also can’t speak to each other unless they’re filming them.
“But you’re not allowed to chat about anything to do with the villa because they want to save all that for the cameras,” AJ said.
Love Island is tougher than it looks. There are a lot of rules that take place on the show. It’s not a six-week vacation filled with beautiful people. What are your thoughts on AJ Bunker’s secrets? Are you surprised? Sound off below in the comment section.
Love Island UK airs on Monday, June 6. Meanwhile, the new season of Love Island’s US version is moving over to Peacock.
