SPOILERS AHEAD FOR SURVIVOR SEASON 42, EPISODE 6:

The Survivor 42 merge episode is finally here. Mostly, at least. There isn’t really a merge vote in this episode. Rather, we see the return of the one-off temporary tribes from Season 41. For anyone who doesn’t remember, Season 41 also had a fake-out merge episode. Season 41’s episode plays out essentially exactly like its counterpart in Season 42. The 12 castaways believe it’s the merge, only to be told that’s not the case. They’re then split into groups of 5 (with 2 on the sidelines) to compete in a reward/immunity challenge.

And, like Season 41, they soon learn that all isn’t as it appears. The result is that the episode harkens back to one of the most infamous blunders of any recent Survivor season.

The Hourglass Twist

The challenge area in Season 42, Episode 6

Episode 6 is the return of the hourglass twist. So there are 2 teams of 5 with 2 outliers from the reward/immunity challenge in this episode. The winning makeshift tribe chooses one of the outliers to keep and one to exile. In this episode, it is Lindsey who is kept and Rocksroy who is sent away. In Rocksroy’s exile, he gains the hourglass twist. The twist allows him to reverse the outcome of the challenge. This means the makeshift tribe that lost becomes safe and the tribe who won becomes vulnerable at tribal council. It also means that Rocksroy becomes safe, whereas he’s vulnerable at tribal council if he doesn’t use the twist.

And the catch? Well, there is none. Whether or not the hourglass twist is put into play literally comes down to whether or not Rocksroy wants immunity. There is no negative aspect to Rocksroy using the twist whatsoever. Jeff tries to play it off like there are major differences between the twist this season and last season. But that’s just not true. It’s actually laughable that he announces there are big changes and then states that the first big change is that the reward challenge food has an Applebee’s sponsor.

So, once again, a terrible twist is used. And, once again, a non-deserving player is sent home. Condolences to Lydia for her untimely elimination as a result. Gone too soon.

‘Survivor’ 41 And 42 Parallels

We’re in the latter half of the season now. The 11 remaining castaways are all together and they only need to boot 5 more to reach the finale episode. Like Season 41, there won’t be a live finale and reunion again this time around. Whether or not the live show will be returning in Season 43 and onward is unknown at this present time. It is interesting to see them announce the winner while the game is still so fresh for the players again, though. The only other times they’ve done it are Season 41 and the very first season. It’s an interesting change of pace and frankly feels a lot less rushed and scripted than the live finales.

New episodes of Survivor Season 42 air every Wednesday.
