‘MAFS’ Differences Between U.S. & Australian Seasons

Married at First Sight

There are many differences between the MAFS Australia and MAFS U.S. versions of the show. While many would think the shows would be pretty similar, there are actually some very big differences that distinguish the two. Keep reading to find out more about the two countries’ versions of Married at First Sight.

MAFS differences between Australia and the United States

Distractify shared all about the differences between the Australian and U.S. versions of MAFS. One of the biggest differences between the two is that the Australian version has same-sex marriages. When producers were asked why the United States doesn’t, they said it’s not that they don’t want to. It’s just that they have all females in one room for casting and the same for the males. Therefore, there’s a chance the two would see each other before the wedding.

They said, “It’s a casting thing. We’d love to but it’s very difficult. … Because we have to put all the women and all the men in the same room in workshops [during the casting process], there is a chance they could see each other [before meeting at the altar]. If we could figure out logistically how [to] do it, we’d love to do it.”

Another pretty big difference is that on Married at First Sight in the U.S., the couples are legally married. They are bound by law and must divorce if they choose to not remain together. However, in Australia, couples are not legally bound. Instead, they have a commitment ceremony where they vow to try and make things work. They do this to comply with marriage laws in the country of Australia.

Of course, they all have different experts as well. The U.S. MAFS stars Pastor Cal Roberson, Dr. Pepper Schwartz, and Dr. Viviana Coles who are the experts in charge. The Australian MAFS experts are John Aiken, Mel Schilling, and Alessandra Rampolla.

One more huge difference is that in Australia some couples have children.

  1. Another huge difference I have noticed on the two shows is the fact that the experts are not nearly as involved in the Australian couples as they are in the US. It seems couples are left to sort things out on their own in the Australian version, whereas the American couples get more hands-on help and marriage advice, especially when there is turmoil, and also internment follow-up during the season.
