Netflix: Volodymyr Zelenskyy plays a teacher who was elected President of Ukraine

Netflix has nabbed the streaming rights for a political sitcom starring Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The actor and comedian plays the role of a teacher, elected as the President of Ukraine. Titled Servant of the People, the series clearly blurs the lines between fact and fiction. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy has recently become known around the world as the Ukrainian President during the ongoing Russian invasion. While there are three seasons of the sitcom, currently, Netflix has only released Season 1. Read on to find out what we know about this unique and topical series, airing on the streamer now.

Netflix streams Servant of the People starring Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Netflix has acquired streaming rights to a Ukrainian political sitcom titled Servant of the People. Meanwhile, in Ukrainian and Russian, the sitcom is titled “Sluga naroda” or “Слуга народу.”

The series stars Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the role of a teacher who is elected President of Ukraine. The actor and comedian has, of course, become famous around the world as the actual Ukrainian President during the ongoing Russian invasion.

While Netflix is currently streaming Season 1 of Servant of the People, there are reportedly three seasons in total. However, it is currently unknown whether the streamer will also release Season 2 and Season 3.

What is the sitcom about?

In the sitcom, a humble teacher, played by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, rails against the corrupt political establishment. The teacher sparks a viral campaign, which unexpectedly leads him to be elected President of Ukraine.

Season 1 features 24 episodes that are available in select Netflix regions. According to What’s on Netflix, it is currently available in the US, Australia, Canada, India and European regions. All three seasons were aired on the local Ukrainian broadcast 1+1 between 2015 and 2019.

Originally, Netflix streamed the show between May 2017 and March 2021. However, with the current situation in Ukraine, the streamer decided to buy the rights again. Obviously, it will have a newfound interest due to the current situation in the country.

In recent weeks, Netflix has responded to the war in Ukraine by dropping all Russian Netflix Original projects. The streamer refuses to add live streams of state broadcasters, while gradually pulling out of the region completely.

Meanwhile, the political sitcom isn’t the only thing to bring Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s talents to the world. Recently, a video of the Ukrainian President, winning Ukraine’s version of Dancing With the Stars has started doing the rounds.
